Do you keep a food journal ?

Hello All,

I am just beginning to get motivated to start a weight loss journey and was curious

if any of you currently keep a food journal this is a method that I have used successfully in the past , but is kind of overwhelming to think about doing for the rest of my life especially now that I have a LO to take care of.  Please tell me about your experiences with this and do you ever "graduate" from the food journal or is it a forever thing?

Thanks!

Re: Do you keep a food journal ?

  • I tracked my food/calories online on Sparkpeople. I did it for about 5 months to get a better idea of how much I was eating vs. how much I should be eating. It worked great for me (lost 20 lbs - in combination with exercise). I haven't logged my food for probably 8 months but haven't gained any weight back. I just now have a better idea of healthy portions.

  • I am actively trying to lose weight and log everything that I eat on Sparkpeople.com. It isn't my plan to do this forever, but I'm sure that once I hit my goal, I'll probably input my daily menu periodically just to make sure that I am staying on track.

  • Thanks for the input ladies,

I think I am just intimidated by the idea of doing it forever so it's nice to know that after a period of time you were both able to step away from it a little with checks and balances.

Also Congrats Mominator on losing so much! Impressive!

  • I have kept one for a little over a year now and it has become just a natural part of my daily routine.  I tried the online ones, but I had trouble keeping up with those bc I am not around my computer all the time, and I found it hard to remember what i ate running around all day, or looking 4 a piece of paper i wrote it on....

So... what works for me is I bought a little agenda book that fits in my purse... I keep it in the kitchen when I am at home and take it with me everywhere... I keep track of what I ate and the calories and/or serving size and any exercise I did that day.  This also helps me keep track of things like how many times that week I have done strength training and how many miles i have jogged that week, etc.  It's nothing fancy... but really easy to keep up with...even through my entire 2nd pregnancy... hope this helps... it's just about finding what works for you.. and that's what will help you stick to it!

  • I am using an iPhone app called Lose It! Its great for keeping track and if you have friends who also have it you can keep track of each other and watch each other's progress. If anything it makes me more aware of how much crap I put into my body!

  • I keep a journal off and on. I will keep it religously until I start effortlessly reaching for the healthy stuff and no longer find myself having to shy away from certain foods so that I don't have to "write it down". Then I know that I have successfully gone back to my healthy ways. If I find myself gaining or feeling like I'm starting to stray, I just start keeping my journal again for a week or two. It helps me get back on track. I find that I have to do this a few times a year. Mostly only during stressfull times or during the winter holidays lol.

  • I use loseit.com.  Journaling my intake has been the biggest contributing factor to losing the baby weight.
