So apparently there's a proper way to pee in a cup?

Who knew? I've just been sticking the cup down there and hoping I get it in. If I miss, I just wipe the outside of the cup with a paper towel. Whatever, right... they wear gloves!

At my last appointment they gave me a sani-wipe and the cup. I thought that was really weird and I wiped my hands with it afterward and then washed my hands (what else do you do with a sani-wipe???).

When I went to my 3 hr GTT I went into the bathroom and saw that there was a full on manual of how you're supposed to collect a "clean pee sample".

Apparently the sani-wipe wasn't for my hands...

AND you're supposed to use one hand to move the "outer area" out of the way, pee a little, stop, and then put the cup under there.

I've been failing at this since I was 13 years old.

Anyone else?

  • Mine has directions for a clean catch right in front of the toilet. It isn't something they need every time (from me at least, only my 1st one this pregnancy was a clean catch. The cup also had a lid, the regular ones are just like a plastic dixie cup.)

  • I was aware of this, and I don't have to pee in a cup at most appointments. It's always in the bathroom where I have to attempt these acrobatics.

I'm non-compliant. I'm lucky if I can manage the sample when I have to give one.

Same here, only my first appt. needed a clean catch. We do a sample every appointment, but I don't sani-wipe unless told. I do pee, stop, then pee in the cup... haven't been told that there are any issues with my samples.

  • Yeah, I'm pretty sure the sign has been right by the toilet the entire time, but I'm obviously unawares. No one has ever told that they needed a "clean catch".
  • This made me giggle! I can imagine you looking at them going "Uhm thanks, but I will just wash my hands in the sink!"
  • I'm asked to do a clean catch sample at every appointment.  They have me use three different sanitary wipes to clean up the area before peeing.  Maybe the nurses at my practice are just germaphobes.

  • It really depends on the test they're doing as to whether it has to be clean catch or not.  They should tell you one way or the other.  If it was supposed to be clean catch and it wasn't, it will skew the results (skin cells, mostly).

  • You'd be surprised how many ppl thought that the sani-wipe was for their hands.  I used to make sure to be really specific with all my patients before letting them use the bathroom.

  • Same here.  Only the first was a clean catch.  There aren't even sani-wipes in the bathroom, just little plastic cups.  I think the nurse just takes it and dips a paper thing in it on the other side of the wall.

At my PCP I do it the "right way."  They give you the cup and instructions every time (plus they are written on the wall).

  • Other than the first pee the only time I've had to do a clean catch is when I had to go to the hospital. They give you three or four sani wipes and a cup with a lid. At the doctors office its just plastic dixie cups in the restroom.

  • I'm used to the general clean catch and the use for the wipes, but in the last few years they've gotten even pickier. With additional steps that I just can't do, pregnant or otherwise. The whole holding everything apart for the rest of the process after wiping. No.

  • The last time I went to the doc, I thought I had a UTI and they gave me a different cup and the wipe.  They asked me if I knew what to do.  I felt so dumb that I never did a clean sample before.  Not only that, but the cup was smaller.  I totally pee'd on my hand.  FAIL.

  • My ob office has a sign up and they instructed me to follow it for each and every pee in cup test. I have always done this since like 10 years or so for ob appointments. Maybe different offices states have different requirements. idk.???

I have to pee in a cup for every appointment. They give me cups at each appointment and expect me to pee in it at home and bring it my appointment. I refuse to put a cup of pee in my purse and carry it around in there. I wait until I get to the hospital and use the restroom there.

  • I have to pee in a cup at every visit, but my doctor's offices have always had nice clear directions on the back of the stall door.

I have to give one every appointment, but I would totally fail at the clean catch. My office hasnt said anything about it, but half the time it sprays where ever it wants, so i really just have to hope that enough of it makes it in the cup.
