Okay ladies help me out here... Annabelle is really congested this week. As soon as I put her to bed at night, it seems about an hour later she wakes up coughing and crying because she can't breath. After several trips to her room, I just bring her to bed with me. Obviously that works okay, when their only one adult in bed (with DH working nights, it works okay). But last night DH stayed home and he decided to rock her to sleep and finally got her down after 3 hours of holding her.
We have the humidifier on and I've suction out her poor little nose. Is there anything else I can do? I've already called the doctor and they say it's just a cold, that it has to run it's course. Poor thing has been sick for weeks now, it comes and goes. Sorry for venting, but I just want my child well.

Re: Congested baby
This has just been a brutal winter for sickness! Poor Annabelle and poor you!
I think when I posted about the boy I watch being so congested Cooper recc'd saline spray - that can help loosen everything up, then you can really suction more. I have also read that putting Vick's VapoRub on kids' feet can help, but I haven't done it.
I like to put essential oils in the humidifier water, a blend of eucalyptus, lavender and tea tree oil- the eucalyptus helps open up the sinuses, lavender is relaxing and helps w/ sleep.
You can try elevation. Depending on how A sleeps you can either put a pillow under her upper body to prop her torso up. If you aren't comfortable giving her a pillow to lay on you can put a rolled up towl under the crib matress to create the incline.
And I know I am going to catch flack for this, but on one occasion when she was really coughing and choking on her post nasal drip so badly that she couldn't sleep I gave Evie a dose of children's Benadryl. She had it left over from an earlier allergic reaction and right on the box it was for runny nose and watery eyes. I gave her a half dose and it dried her up enough that she slept for about 4 hours.
I would not recommend using benadryl for a cold in general, especially if she has never had it before!
Last night I really wanted to give A a pillow, but DH was all worried. I'm going to try the towel under the mattress tonight. And the vicks on her feet too.
Thanks for all the suggestions.
It has been such a long, rough winter for you guys.
I second the saline before suctioning. We actually bought one of the battery powered aspirators when DS was just sick...he hated the bulb and will calmly sit and let us suction with the battery one.
DS usually showers with DH at night, so we make the bathroom really steamy before the shower, so he gets a good 15 - 20 minutes of breathing it in.
Hope A feels better!
Happy Birthday, little man. We love you so much!
My favorite money saving tip: I've earned more than $300 in gift cards (Amazon, Starbucks, Southwest!) using SwagBucks for internet searching - and you can too! It's FREE and EASY!
DS is just getting over this, too... we ran the humidifier and suctioned his nose + used the Little Noses saline drops. We also tried the PediaCare Vapor Plug (which worked wonders!) and gave him a bath immediately before bed each night w/the Johnson's Vapor Bath (also worked wonderfully). On the worst day of congestion, I took him into the bathroom and sat with him in there while a hot shower ran, and the steam really helped to loosen things up for him. We didn't try the propped-up mattress, but I've had that recommended several times... DS just moves way too much at night for that to be effective at all for him.
Hope she's feeling better ASAP! Stuffy babies are no fun.
... every single day of forever.
I think the benadryl isn't a bad suggestin and my doctor has suggested that in the past too. I hear good things about the Vicks rub, but I haven't used it yet.
You could also try letting her sleep on your chest while you sit in a recliner. Not the best sleep for you, but its better than nothing.
If Ella's really congested, I steam up the bathroom and then run a bath for her in teh steamy bathroom - that really loosens things up and relaxes her so she can sleep.
Definitely squirt her up with some saline before suctioning her nose. It's gross, but it gets it out!
Elevate the mattress where she's sleeping.
The Vicks plugin thing worked wonders for us...I think it's the link posted above.
A little tylenol or motrin before bedime may help her sleep better, but only give 1/2 the dose (you don't want to mask a fever if she does get one)
