Do you schedule an appointment if you know what is going on?
Today for example, LO clearly has pink eye. I have the medication from the last time (November) and know it hasn't expired and how often to give it.
Should I take the time to make an appointment and pay a co pay for something that will most likely take 60 seconds for the doctor to confirm? (I hope this doesn't come across as me not caring-- I do, I just don't know if the appointment is necessary.)
Thanks!
Re: Doctor Appt Question
That sort of thing would warrant him to be sent home from daycare. So if it was a day I knew I could spend at home with him, and through the weekend to keep him on the meds, then no, I probably wouldn't make an appointment. I would keep an eye on it to make sure it's not something else (an irritant or injury), and take him to Urgent Care over the weekend if it was necessary though.
That was my thinking too. I am home with her today (normally I work on Fridays).
Going in... They think it could be an ear infection?
I understand being cautious, but whenever I call with a question (100% of the time) they recommend coming in and usually ruling out whatever their concern was. Is that typical?
(I guess I am asking, does anyone call the nurses line and they do not recommend coming in?)
One time I called when DD#2 had a stomach bug and they didn't advise coming in--based on the symptoms I described, the nurse said there really wouldn't be anything they could do, but she told me to call again/bring her in if things changed...another time, DD#2 had several days of diarreaha, but no other symptoms and they said to watch and wait for another day or two before bringing her in.
But those are probably the only times I have not been told to bring the LO in...
I hope your DD is feeling better!
I often don't get told to come in right away. For us it is mostly, here is what to do in the meantime, if x, y or z occurs THEN call and make an appt. For example I was pretty sure Molly had a yeast diaper rash so the nurse told me what OTC to get, how often to apply it and when to come in if it didn't get better (unfortuantely it didn't get better and we need a scrip).
Why did they think she had an ear infection?
We're back! Its pink eye!
The nurse said it could be an ear infection because she also had a runny nose and cough. I mentioned that she has basically had these since she started daycare 6 months ago... I also said that 2 other children in her class had already gotten diagnosed with pink eye and she asked "Diagnosed by who?" I said basically that I assumed their doctors had. I think the nurse was having a bad day.
When I told the doc about a possible ear infection (per the nurse), she kind of rolled her eyes! I guess now I know for sure-- no ear infections!
Its interesting-- she has had stomach bug symptoms and just plain old diarrhea before and they always have us come in... Makes me want to stop calling!
Thanks for the help.
