Experience with Lasix?

My son was given his first dose of Lasix yesterday, since he was retaining so much fluid around his lungs. As the surviving twin from an interval delivery, he got so much extra that didn't all go away. The Lasix is being given in three doses, one every 48 hours. They want to try to get him off the CPAP soon. He's stuck between 32-44% O2 and his care team thinks its the extra fluid in and around his lungs that is causing the struggle.

Anyone else's little ones need a course of Lasix? What was your experience?

Re: Experience with Lasix?

  • Both of my little ones got doses of Lasix. It does work, they did need more later especially DD who had severely under developed.

  • Both my girls had several doses of Lasix. It really did help with all the extra fluid. Once they got on a daily course of Aldactol and Diueril they didnt need the extra doses of Lasix as often. GL i know its scary!

  • DS, my pprom twin, had multiple courses of Lasix during his 9.5 month hospital stay. I honestly lost count of how many times he had it. It does work wonders to clear out the fluid in the lungs though.

Lasix is given either via IV or orally. The IV version is said to be associated with hearing loss (a small chance). I was not informed of any other side effects, apart from peeing more. Usually the hospital will convert to oral Lasix as soon as possible. FWIW my son just had a hearing test at 9 months adjusted, and his hearing is a-okay.

Once your LO is more stable and on less O2 they will convert to other oral diuretics. My son is on nasal cannula and still takes two of them today as his CLD is really bad. Your LO will probably not be on diuretics after discharge. Good luck!

  • He is on oral Lasix.

  • My peanut was on Lasix from around 5 or 6 weeks old (30-31 weeks gestation) until 5 1/2 months old (3 months adjusted) every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.  He has pretty serious chronic lung disease though as he was on the ventilator for 8 weeks and often required oxygen at 80-100%.

  • lilith was on lasix several times. i was told lasix should not be used for extended periods of time because it can flush out a lot ofnecessary sodium.  but, overall i didnt see it as a big deal.

  • Evan was on it for his lungs as well for a good long while. I can't remember how long exactly, but he didn't come home on it. It did throw off some of his electrolytes and his acid/base balance as a result, but the dr's we able to manage that just fine. They also said he had some calcifications in his kidneys they thought were likely due to all the diuretics, again they said it shouldn't bother him.
