anyone's DC have pneumonia?

My poor little boy. He's had a slight fever since Monday (around 100.5), had diarrhea once, his eyes have been watering like crazy and his nose has been running nonstop.  He also developed a cough Tuesday night.  I couldn't figure out what the heck was wrong with him. I thought at first it was his 2-yr molars coming in but I couldn't see or feel anything. Then with the watery eyes I thought allergies but claritin did nothing when I gave it to hime yesterday. After waking up this morning with another fever I had DH take him to the pedi as I need to save all my days for maternity leave. Well he just called to say he has pneumonia and double ear infections.  Sad

The pedi prescribed ammoxicillin for the ear infections and said if the pneumonia was bacteria the antibiotic would help it too.  If it is viral, however, we just have to wait it out.  So my question is, for those that have had a DC with pneumonia, is this all they do for it? Pneumonia is such a scary word and I thought it had to be treated with breathing treatments or something.  Also, if they were prescribed ammoxicillin, did that clear it up?

My husband didn't know to mention that C has been on ammox. before for ear infection and it didn't work. We had to switch to Omnicef. So I put a call in to the nurse to see if we need to get that script changed. I'm really hoping something works soon though. He looks miserable.

  • Oh, I'm so sorry your little guy has all of these issues. How miserable he must feel. I believe MelissaMc's Jack just went throught his. Hopefully she chimes in.

  • Jack has had pneumonia several times over the years... Unfortunately yes, that's really all they do for it (unless it progresses severely - but there's no reason to think that would happen).

The way I understand it, breathing treatments with a nebulizer are to treat an inflamed airway, which is unrelated to excess fluid in the lungs.  The only time Jack ever had nebulizer treatments was when his pneumonia coincided with bronchiolitis.

He has had antibiotics for pneumonia before, augmentin when he was not in the hospital (which I think is the same thing as amox) and different cephalosporin antibiotics when it was hospital acquired.

I'm so sorry your little guy is so sick....  I really really hope the antibiotics do the trick and he's all better soon!!!!

  • My nephew had it when he was 2.  He was really sick and spent a few nights at Children's- I believe his lung even collapsed.  I know it was a really scary time for my ILs.  I do not recall the details as I was pregnant and wasn't allowed to go down there (cold/flu season + 12-16 weeks pregnant + PICU floor = not a good idea for me).  I know that they had to monitor it, and even once he was home they did breathing treatments.  Since then, he has developed asthma, and I've heard some speculate if there is a connection between the two.

The good news is he is a thriving, healthy 5 year old now.

  • pneumonia is viral almost all of the time. The only reason people are put on antibiotics is for a secondary infection such as an ear infection or if the patient is freaking out and demand it because they think it will help. It does sounds scary, pneumonia is more common than you think.Antibiotics will help the small amount of bacterial pneumonia cases that do happen. If pneumonia is bacterial the child or adult can get very ill.
