Success after IF

Who had a much better reponse to injectables?

I have been on 6 rounds of clomid (although I'm not sure if you would count the first 3 as "rounds" considering I didn't really O except for once on 100mg).

My dr wants to start me off on menopur but the last time we spoke about this, he said he wanted to mix it with clomid (due to my size, I'm only 90lbs).

I'm waiting to hear back from the nurse today regaring the protocol. I'm a little nervous about starting injectables (scared of s/e, cost, etc)

I'm just hoping that this time it works! Just wondering what your thoughts were. We are doing IUI.

Re: Who had a much better reponse to injectables?

  • I did not respond at all to Clomid. I did four rounds, from 50mg to 200mg, and never produced a follicle. I finally ovulated on my first Gonal-f cycle.

Injectables are a little scary (especially if you're paying out of pocket!) but the side effects are minimal compared to Clomid. There is a possibility of overstimming, but your RE will monitor you carefully to make sure that doesn't happen.

    Good luck!

  • I responded to Clomid, but my lining was horrible.  With injectables I didn't have that problem.  I know it's a little scary!  Good luck!

  • we started injectables by adding them to a clomid cycle...and it's a good thing too because I realllllly responded to them.  Based on how I responded to such a small amount my Dr told me I should never do just an injectable cycle because I would most likely overstim... so yeah the injectables made a big difference to my body.

    Good luck!

  • I didn't respond to Clomid, but I responded great with injectables.
  • I don't ovulate on my own and never responded to clomid. Finally I decided to try injectables. I used follistim at a very low dose (started at 50iu and only went up to 75iu) and ended up with 2 mature follies, did IUI, and got my BFP!  As for s/e, I had horrible headaches on clomid and had no side effects at all with the injectables, except for some bloating (which I also had with clomid).  GL!

  • I did!  We did 6 rounds of clomid, including 2 with IUI, and although I ovulated nothing came of it. My first IUI cycle on  follistim and BAM! pregnant Big Smile
  • I did not respond to Clomid....at all.  Femara on it's own was not enough either.  The winning combo for me was femara + injectibles + trigger + IUI.

I did not have any side effects from the injectibles other than mild pain at the site.  GL & HTH!

  • I ovulated once in 3 rounds of clomid and was a raving, sweaty lunatic with crappy lining in all three cycles.  Injectables were MUCH better.  My doc told me that clomid works on the brain to make you ovulate (hence the crazies) and the injectables work directly on the ovaries so people have a much better response.  Good luck with your cycle!

  • My RE said that clomid would be a waste of time for me, so I went right to injectibles.  I cannot speak to one working better than the other but his logic was that clomid really works your brain and injectibles work your ovaraies directly.  If you go that route, I found that sticking the needle into my upper thigh was easiest and slow meant no pain at all.
    Good luck!!

  • I responded to clomid and O'd but never got PG.  I did however, get PG on our first cycle of injectables.

  • Like the other posters...I too never o'd on my own & didn't respond to clomid.  I was very scard of the injectibles bec/ my nurse just ordered the meds and never really told me how to inject them.  I ended up calling the on-call nurse to ask - mostly to just reassure me.  The first cycle was what did it for me.  I was scheduled for a IUI, but DH really wanted to try at home since it was the first time I was actually o'ing.

I don't remember any side effects, other than slight burning at the injection site - but that only lasted a few seconds.  The biggest bummer with injectibles is the constant monitoring you have to do.  I went every 3 days to every other day to every day right before the trigger.  But getting the BFP was worth all the driving, sticking and anxiety :)  Good luck to you!

  • I did 8 rounds of Clomid that were all BFN's and got pregnant with twins my first round of injectibles with IUI.  I'm also really petite so my doctor stimmed me at a very low dose to prevent me from having too many mature follies since there was no way I could carry high order multiples.  I ended up with two at trigger and they both fertilized.  You can read about my BFP cycle in my blog or feel free to page me with any questions.  Good luck!
