DS has been on Zantac and we're starting Prevacid. He's been having frequent episodes of refusing to eat so we're trying this in case it's reflux related. If your LO is on Prevacid, how has it worked for you? Any concerns re: side effects?
Did you continue Zantac for hte first few days, or discontinue it as soon as you started Prevacid (have to call doctor tomorrow as they didn't really say)?

DS was on Zantac for about 10 days and then it suddenly lost it's effectiveness. So we switched to Prevacid and there has been amazing improvement. Not sure if it's the meds or Alimentum or the combo, but it's been great. No side effects at all.
We use the solutabs and give half in the AM and half in the PM. You're supposed to give it 30 min before meals.
My LO has had severe reflux since she was about one month old. After seeing a Pediatric Gastroenterologist several times, we have tried almost every PPI/reflux med out there, including prevacid, and we have finally settled on Nexium for the following reasons:
1. I found it WAY easier to administer than the Prevacid solutabs. My LO always found a way to spit out half of those little beads it dissolves into, no matter if I held it in her mouth or dissolved it in a syringe. With the Nexium, you just dissolve it in 1 tablespoon water in a small bottle, and they just drink it down!
2. The nexium water solution THICKENS before you let them drink it, so its less likely to come back up.
Also, the GI specialists do recommend continuing your zantac for one to two weeks after starting any PPI, because it can take this long for your PPI to start making a real difference for your LO. We actually had to stop the Zantac earlier than we wanted though because it gave or LO horrible diarrhea after a few weeks of being on it. Luckily the PPI's (prevacid, omeprazole, nexium) usually have little to no side effects.
Good luck, i've been through it all with the reflux and I know what a nightmare it can be. And just as a side note: I eventually moved to bottle feeding so thatI could start thickening her feeds and its made a WORLD of difference. I use gelmix (www.gelmix.com). Its calorie free, unlike rice cereal, and won't cause constipation.
HTH!
