Shampoo for curly-haired girls?

My dd has very curly (spiral curls) hair and it seems a bit dry.  We only wash it twice a week and I use Aveeno Moisturing Shampoo.  I condition it with my creme rinse (Biologe Hydrating balm).

Any suggestions for better/less drying shampoos to use?

  • I have very curly hair and use either Curls Rock or Foxy Curls. They're not cheap though, so I'm not sure you want to use them on a LO. How about Pantene's curly hair line?

  • I actually bought an adult conditioner for DD.  I got her the Pantene Frizzy to Smooth for Curly hair.  I only use a dime sized amount once every couple of weeks but it's helped. Her hair isn't nearly as tangled.  L'Oreal Kids has a 2 in 1 for curly hair that's not bad.  And she gets a leave in sprayed in after any wash I don't use the Pantene.  I don't wash her hair with every bath either.  Like maybe twice a week.  Anymore than that and her hair starts to make her look like Richard Simmons.

  • What do you do to help get the curls tamed in the morning?  DD's hair looks great after a bath if we've washed in that night (wash every other night) but looks pretty crazy in the morning and I find any curl sprays, even if I just give a really quick, light spray make her hair get hard which I don't like.

  • If it's too crazy it's pigtails all the way.  Usually I wet a wide toothed comb and then scrunch the curls.  It's not perfect but it takes care of the crazy frizz.   I like to finger curl her hair too.

  • Maybe find a light leave in conditioner. I know Aussee (sp) the purple bottle makes a really nice one called hair insurance or something like that.. or maybe Frizz ease.. just something to leave in.

  • A friend started using the no-poo system and is soooo happy with it.  You still get your hair clean, obviously, but it is supposed to be amazing for split ends, frizz, and drying.  She's been doing it for months now and is really happy!  I don't know if it would work for kids, but with everything I know about it I don't see why not!  Google and you'll get lots of resources.

  • I have super curly hair and my hair dresser told me to get Miracle 7 you get it at Sally's. This is the best shampoo and conditioner. Most of the time I only use the conditioner with any shampoo I like and when I use this conditioner I don't have to use any product.  I use it on my ds hair also.
  • I would recommend the no-poo method already referenced or at least a no sulfate shampoo like devacurl (carried at ulta). Have you checked out the Curly Girl book?

Use a spray bottle with water in it.  Just  a mist.  The curls will come right back on their own.  Don't touch it for a few minutes and then scrunch it with you hands.

  • DD is biracial so it's probably a little different but DD has really soft (but tight) spiral curls.  They range from a little wider than a pencil all the way up to big curls.

We use Sprout (I think it's Original Sprout) products for shamoo and conditioner.  They're all natural and ok for babies.  Next we scrunch her hair with a towel to dry it.  Then we use some Carol's Daughter hair milk and scrunch it in to define curls (also natural).  When DD wakes up most of the curls are still in tact.  We just spritz water from a spray bottle to feshen her curls before she goes to daycare.

We wash 1x a week to reduce frizz and usually wet her hair without washing 3 days in or so.  I feel like I've almost perfected it.  I'm considering a daily leave in conditioner but it might make her hair too greasy.  We'll see...  GL!

  • DD has spiral curls too. I wash her hair with J&J No More Tangles shampoo for curly hair every other night. I spritz it and comb it out with a detangling spray (J&J No More Tangles spray is my fav) after her bath. In the morning or if she needs a mid-day freshen up, I use the detangling spray all over and comb through her hair and hand crunch the curls back into place. DD will not let me pull her hair back, so I try pretty hair to keep her hair from looking too wild.

  • DD1 has curly hair.  I use California Baby on her still.  I found a Mousse that has conditioner in it.  I spritz her hair in the AM with water, and then put the mousse in.  It is called Circle of Friends Mousse.  It is mango scented and works wonders.

  • we use Johnson's No More Tangles Shampoo 2-in-1 Formula for Thick/ Curly Hair.  it's supposed to  have some conditioner in it as well.  i wash DD's hair about every 3 days with it.  in the morning i spray her head with No More Tangles until it is wet enough to comb, I style it (pigtails, or half pigtails like in siggy) and let it dry.  It stays curly but gets a little messier after her nap.  If anything I just add some more no more tangles.

  • I finally recently figured out how to keep DD1's curls under control and looking great! Thanks to some great recs on this and the F&B board on the nest :)

I use L'Oreal's shampoo&conditioner in one, for kids. Always use a leave in conditioner after. I really like Giovanni leave-in. It's all natural, which is always a plus for kids ;)

I wash her hair once a week. Every morning, I spray J&J detangler and comb it with a pick. Then I fix the curls with my fingers.
