DC and PT

If your LO is in DC (or MDO, etc.), did they basically teach LO to PT? And what age?  I am kind of not stressing about it b/c it's not like I have any day-to-day control over it.  Of course, on the weekends, we will be consistant with what DC is doing, but I figure maybe the kids are more likely to PT b/c all the other kids are doing it, too.  DC asked me to bring pull ups for him to wear at naptime.  He's not even 2 yet, so it kind of weirds me out, but I guess it's around "that time".  We will start having him sit on the potty before and after nap, too, at home (right now, we just do it at bathtime and read a book - but he hasnt' actually gone, yet).  And they said the next room he goes to (at around age 2), they really push PTing.

What was your experience with DC and PT?  Did they cold turkey it (bring 5 outfits for everyday for accidents?) or did they have you bring pull ups to wean into?

Re: DC and PT

  • They start sitting kids on the potty at 18 months at Rena's school. Since she moved up to her new class (around 2.5 years), they really push the PT. I send pullups everyday and they have tried cold turkey underwear a couple times too. She can't move up into the pre-school wing (around 3.5 years) until she's fully PT. She's finally getting better about going in the potty now since she watches the 3 year olds go and sees them in underwear. But from my experience, even if the school pushes it early on, kids won't PT until they're fully ready. We're still not quite there yet...I'm thinking it's time to try the cold turkey underwear method at home soon. ;)

This is what I am figuring - but I am guessing they will have more cleanup duty than I will - so more power to them if they want to start early!

  • DD's school does not allow pullups, it's either diapers or underwear. My kids only go part time, but it is a fulltime daycare and 90% of the kids are there fulltime.

I did pt DD early (22mo) and she was mostly pt'd for a month before they let her use the potty at school - but she wasn't in the 2yo room yet where they have a bathroom and it's easier for the teachers to get them on the toilet. (By mostly pt'd I mean she was pt'd while awake but needed diapers for naptime as well as overnight). But yes, it was bring 5 outfits to school and pretty much all-or-nothing approach except for  diapers for naps.

Once DD started pottying at school, I'd say within a month there were 3-4 others that were PTing too. Probably because they saw DD doing it and kids like to do what the other kids are doing. In the 2yo room about half the kids were still in diapers. In the 3yo room there was only one in diapers at the beginning of the year (and it was a girl, not one of the boys!), and they are all out of diapers now.

I think that my LO is in the same daycare/class that yours is. She turned two on the 25th of Feb. They never told us anything about it we asked them about it about a month ago. We started potty training about three weeks ago (We started the day that they were closed because of the ?bad weather?).

When we did ask them, they told us that they don?t usually start until the next class, but if we wanted to and we thought she was ready we could do it now, so we did. She was already telling us every time she had a wet diaper and showed other signs. At first they told us that she was required to wear pull-ups. I didn?t really like the idea but they said that for health/sanitary reasons they required it, which I can totally understand.

Basically she had a four day break from school, we started training on Friday morning and continued through the following Monday evening, then took her to school with a crazy amount of clothes, socks, and extra shoes on Tuesday. (Which was totally un-necessary because while they are in pull-ups, the pull up absorbs the accident if there is one.) We ended up bringing all the extra clothes home, expect for what she keeps in her bag ? which is usually just outfits.   She actually did better than we expected.  When the teachers thought she was ready, they stopped using the pull ups. (We did put on a regular panty under the pull up while she was in them, so she would still have the ?wet? feeling when she did have an accident ? in an effort to help with the Potty Training) So when we picked her up and she didn?t have them on we started taking her without them to school as well.  (Although I am pretty sure they still have a stash of them for here there)

Basically they usually have them go about every two hours while at school, so that is what we do at home as well; in addition to right before she goes to sleep and right when she wakes up in the morning.

  • Oh, yes - happy birthday, S!  We enjoyed your b-day goodie bag! ;-)
