teething

We're pretty sure Brady is teething.   He has all of the signs.  It's not been a fun few days at our house.   What's most concerning to me is that not only has his appetite decreased... he refuses to nurse.  He won't even attempt it - he just screams when I offer.   So I've been pumping and putting it in a bottle for every feeding.  Even early am.    In your experience, is this normal?

Re: teething

  • When Ben first started teething he reduced some of his bottles by 3 ounces so this is totally normal... I would just keep making sure hes producing enough wets!

BTW my SIL told me to look out for you... shes a may 07 knottie :) Caro77

  • The symptoms of teething and ear infections are pretty similar.  It might be worth it to put in a call to your pedi just in case.  I have no suggestions as to why he would drink from a bottle but not nurse...maybe the harder sucking is more painful?  Sorry not to be much help.

  • Definitely go get his ears checked!  I have mistaken symptoms of teething twice and they ended up being ear infections.  How is he sleeping?  Is he sleeping like normal or is he waking up more often and crying/screaming when waking up?  Is he more clingy, fussy, etc.  Even if he isn't running a fever he could still have an ear infection.

I always err on the side of caution now and make a pedi appt. if symptoms last more than 24 hours.  Better to be safe than sorry!  Good luck!

  • It's so hard for me to say.  Justin had ear infections for 3 months last winter and I thought it was teething.  Typical teething -- now that he has the ear tubes -- doesn't cause him to refuse to nurse although I have heard some people say that.  He actually seems to want to nurse more often, but for shorter periods of time.  I would also be concerned about substituting a bottle too often because you don't want him to prefer that.

I too would encourage you to check with the pedi to rule out an ear infection.  It's that time of year, unfortunately, and that's been my experience.

  • Maggie did a lot of the same things and it was an ear infection. She was drooling through bibs, I was sure it was teething.

  • he's not pulling at his ears - which were definitely signs when the girls had ear infections.   He wasn't sleeping well - mostly because of his congestion/stuffy nose i thought.   He slept from 10:30pm-5am last night though... woke up wouldn't eat & fell back asleep until 7am.

No fever, but he has all of the other signs of teething. never crossed my mind it could be something else.

  • I have taken DS in to have ears checked numerous times and they have told me it is just teething.  DS did the same thing though with teething but he wouldn't take a bottle either.  He nursed but not as frequently as he normally does.  Good luck!
