Difference btwn woven and knit?

I see a lot of ppl here hating on woven - why is that?  Also, I *think* I can tell the difference but I'm not always 100%, can you just tell them apart?

  • If you can stretch the fabric, it's a knit.

  • Wovens don't have the give that knits do, so they usually fit a smaller size range.  Most WAHM CD makers will tell you whether a print is knit or woven up front in their listing.  I don't care so much whether it is knit or woven - I just hate it when I get something that is clearly a very low quality fabric.  You just know that it won't last.  I am kicking myself for buying a NIP woven GM that I just received.  The fabric is bargain bin quality, but I was attached to the print.  Now seeing it in person it is even worse than I though.  Lame.
  • Ditto.  Knits have more give than wovens so they generally tend to fit better as your LO gets older.  But, my son is 28 lbs and our wovens still fit fine, I just prefer them to have a little more give.  Some say wovens tend to fade less, but I think it more depends on the fabric itself.  I'd say it's pretty impossible for a diaper maker to judge a fabric to see how it maintains its quality over the course of time because that would involve them taking a piece of the fabric and putting it through the weeks of abuse that a diaper would take so that's why you have some knits or wovens that look awesome after a million washes and some that are faders.  :)
