First I am thinking H and I are taking a cruise later this year. I have always thought about surprising him with a trip. I found the perfect cruise the week of our anniversay to locations I know he would LOVE. So with that said, if you have surprised a spouse with a trip how did you do it? When did you tell them (a day before, a week before, you just drove to "dinner" one night and ended up at CVG, what?), how did you handle time off work for him (and we work at the same place, so I can easily hit up his boss as needed or just lie to him to get him to take it off, just in case), and did you let him pack or did you attempt to do that for him (since it's a cruise this part scares me a little)?
Second question, for those who have looked at or taken cruises, are travel agencies any better? I did that one website where the travel agents quote prices, but orbitz or priceline are ALWAYS better priced, as we get upgraded to a nicer cabin class for free as return cruisers and the agencies are quoting higher prices for lower classes. I don't know what travel agents do, over and above booking, which I can do online. Do they get to know your preferences and call you when a good opportunity comes up (i.e. low price, new exciting cruise route, etc.) or are they more reactive where I call when I want to book? Honestly we take at least 1 a year, sometimes 2 cruises, so I really have been thinking about a TA who can be on the lookout for us, but if they are just finding the cruise and booking, that does really feel like anything I can't do myself. What do you think, go with a TA or DIY for travel? If you found travel agents are better, do you have a recommendation? Any nesties/bumpies who are TA?

I have no advice but I think you're crazy (in a good way) for wanting to suprise him. I would totally screw up something important if I tried to do this.
Good luck!
I surprised DH with his ultimate trip of a lifetime for his 30th. We went to Moab, UT for an adventure. He's big into off-roading so I reserved a jeep that was equipped to be beat up and researched trail maps and places we could go. We also went on a rafting trip and spent the rest of the time hiking. I can't express how excited I was while planning this and how many times I just wanted to tell him.
I'm happy it was a surprise though. I wrapped up a big binder with all the information, maps and reservation information, weather reports and sunrise/sunset info. He knew we were going somewhere so I had him take off work a couple months prior.
Have fun! Surprises are the best!
Now that sounds like a good idea. I can print out the itenerary for the cruise and a few shore excursions and maybe some info about each port. Oh... I like that idea a lot. And telling him we are going "somewhere" would work too. Then he wouldn't cancel vacay without telling me. That could work.
@ Fozzy - Yes I am totally crazy, but I completely own up to it! LOL He's just one of those guys who likes to surprise you randomly (like a card on the anniv. of our 1st date) so I just want to return the favor. I can totally pull it off as I always make our travel decisions by myself, as he just agrees to whatever I say (much to my chagrin)! I think I am going to withdraw the money while he is still recovering from his injury so he doesn't notice it missing. He'll just think it was for baby Addy stuff or day care or some such. This can totally work.

It sounds like a blast! Keep us updated with how the suprise goes!
Esther - if you want to go the TA route, talk with Dan when you get a chance - his sister is an independent travel agent. She lives in PA but you can do everything with her one the phone/email. She has helped my parents several times for trips and she is great. It does not cost anything to go through her. At the least she can help you find the deals that are out there!
