Walmart does, indeed, have the ability to make a 1/4 sheet Thomas the Train cake. However, since I really prefer a round cake (we have a round celebration cake plate that has become a "tradition" in our house...yes, I know...I'm silly) and because I'm kind of a cake snob (yes, I know...I'm silly), we decided to go the specialized bakery route. That said, A Spoon Fulla Sugar is making an 8" round, white/raspberry preserve, fondant sculpted Thomas the Train cake for J's party.
All that said, the owner told me that an 8" cake will only serve 15-20 people. There *may* be 25 people at the party. Now I'm thinking I should just bite the bullet ($15 more) and go with the 10" cake. We will be serving a number of appetizers + pizza & salad + my sister is making her famous cookies (and I bought a tub of brownie bites from Sam's). DH keeps telling me that the 8" will be plenty, but I ALWAYS over-buy when I'm hosting, because I'd rather have too much than not enough. WWYD?
Re: F/U to birthday cake
Glad you found someone to do what you want!
I would go bigger as well, for $15 I would rather know I have plenty (and maybe leftovers
Hope his party is so fun!!!
I'm with you and Hannah, I'd get the bigger cake. If you have leftovers, so be it.
The thing that kills me about these professional cakes is their idea of a "serving". Their "serving" is my bite size. I'd rather have a bigger cake and serve larger pieces than a thumbnail size.

I'd rather have too much than not enough.
But then again... there's usually extra cake.
That's a toughy... but extra cake isn't *that* bad, is it?
Thanks, ladies!
SOLD! Mmmmm...cake for breakfast.
