Another c-section recovery question

Recovering from a c-section is very new to me so I have another question!  I delivered one week ago today and while I'm still pretty swollen walking around is pretty easy, but I'm not feeling up for going out for long periods of time.  My mom and I took my 2 year old out to Target a couple of days ago and it wiped me out.  I hate not being very active so does anyone roughly around when they started feeling somewhat normal?  I know I won't be running anytime soon but I'd love to be able to go out for an afternoon, especially now that DS is nursing and I'm not feeling tied down to the pump.  TIA!

Re: Another c-section recovery question

  • keep walking and eventually you'll better and be able to do longer distances, but I would not do anything that really exerts you until after your 6week pp check-up.

    I really don't remember...I'd say maybe 2 weeks

  • I was easily winded until about 2 weeks pp and then started getting stronger. Remember, mama, it is major surgery so you need to give yourself time to recover!

  • you really should be taking it easy right now! just ask someone who had her incision rip open. the incision is in many layers, so it could rip open internally and you wouldn't know until you had symptoms. this is why the standard advice is to minimize walking (especially on stairs or anywhere where your abdominal muscles are used).

when i was discharged, they told me 2-3 weeks of minimal (as in, you need to get up to use the bathroom, get the baby, sit at the table to eat, etc) exertion, then adding in things as i felt comfortable. my doctor advised no more walking than once around the block, beginning at 1 week.

of course your OB's orders will be different than mine were, and your post-surgical care should be appropriate for your fitness level, energy level and comfort level. but i suspect that trips to the store probably shouldn't be on the to-do list at just 1 week pp!

take care of yourself and allow others to do things for you right now. even if you feel great today, you could be doing damage to yourself by overdoing it.

Seriously, though, it is MAJOR surgery. You need to be taking it easy and resting. Although you might feel fine, it doesn't mean that things are back to normal internally, so just take your time. I would not be out running errands yet. In fact, I'd avoid car trips unless they are neccessary, ie, pediatrician trips. You don't want to have to come to a sudden stop with a sore belly. Also, I found that standing up completely straight was difficult for about 2 weeks afterwards, which consequently put a strain on my lower back.

Put your feet up, enjoy your newly latching buddy, and give it time.
