CDing mamas, need some advice

We have intended to switch to CD after we got past the newborn "poop every diaper, every hour" stage. I think we're there, plus I kind of want to make the switch before I have to buy any more disposables. :)  H is just about out of newborn size and we have a pack of size 1s that are slightly big but I will use until we get our stash all set.

I'd bought 4 thirsties covers in anticipation of doing prefolds/covers for while we'd be doing laundry more frequently, and then moving to pockets (I have 2 BG OS that I got at a cottonbabies clearance). I never bought the prefolds, or the snappis. So my question is.... should I just move to the pockets/AIOs at this point, or do the prefold/cover stage for a while? She's 10lbs and tall, but she has lots of chunk on her thighs.

  • I had a mix of prefolds, fitteds, and AIOs for our newborn stage and actually never touched the prefolds. Now that we're into our pockets, I'm loving them. They are so easy! I have a few AIOs still and I like them as well although they take longer to dry.

  • Yay cloth diapers!

Its not really a stage thing - you can do prefolds/covers regardless of the baby's size. What it really comes down to is preference. I started CDing with a stash of BG 3.0s and am now, after two months, looking into prefolds/covers/fitteds. To me, the BGs create a LOT of laundry and leave red marks on C's waist and thighs. They also take up a ton of room when being stored. I still like them, but will probably integrate different types of CDs and thin my BG stock soon.

I'd weigh the pros and cons of each type, try some out, and figure out what will work best for you!

  • We're still using prefolds and newborn fitteds with our thirsties covers - M is too small, even at 10lbs, for our BG pockets - some how she has skinny thighs!

I agree it's not about stages - just finding what works for you. :)

  • I agree that it really is all preference.  We use hybrid CD's (flips and gdiapers) mostly because when I am home I use the cloth inserts, but when DS is with his grandma while I am at work, or when he is home with DH we use the flushable inserts which make caretakers much less unhappy about the whole CD situation...so far I have been very happy with my flips and gdiapers...I know on the CD board they talk alot about Jillian's Dresser which is a website that will send you a "mixed bag" of different CD for a small deposit so you can try all different kinds and return the ones you don't like and then make a stash with the ones you do...good luck!

  • I would suggest doing a diaper trial through Jillians Drawers (I would link you to it but I'd hate to be banned for trying to help someone ;) before investing a bunch of money into the diapers.

The diaper trials are pretty much zero risk, you'd lose $10 if you decided you didn't like anything at all and returned the whole lot but that way you'd get to try all of the different types of diapers.  I have a mix of BG 3.0 and 4.0 and fitteds plus covers.  I like both although I hate touching the microfiber of the BGs so eventually I'll probably switch the inserts out with Hemp or Bamboo or something.  I like the fitteds plus covers a lot because they absorb instantly and I don't have to touch anything gross when changing a diaper.  My favorites for night time are fitteds with wool covers.  You'll find out what you like and it will probably be totally different than what any of us like, it just depends on the kid and the stage they're in.

  • I bought all kinds of different AIO's and pockets before DS was born and he's just starting to fit into them now (he weighs 14 lbs). Before that, they all leaked so we just used prefolds covers and fitteds, which I actually love. It's not just about weight but about body shape too so it's tough to tell what's going to work before you actually get it.  If I could do it over, I would've bought less and done more buying now that I know what I like. I'd say if you're going to buy, buy 1 of somethign and see how you like it first.

  • I'd agree with getting a trial to start. It's a good way to figure out what you like and what works on your baby.  I decided pretty fast that I didn't like prefolds which is too bad because they're so economical. We're using Flips now and I really like them. They are great on our little girl's chubba chubba thighs, but I wish they had covers that were more fun.  When it gets warmer I'll probably get some Kawaii diapers for the cute factor because she won't always be wearing pants.

  • I think trials are a great idea especially since you can get a huge chunk of money back for those diapers that dont work for you. I wish we had done that but instead we bought a variety of diapers, mostly used so they were cheaper, and that has worked really well for us. We like our prefolds/covers for home, pockets or aios for night time or out and about or babysitter. we have bumgen 3 &4, fuzzibunz, and thirsties, also exploring ai2s with softbums, and waiting on some kawaiis for overnight. We still want to try fitteds, but haven't bought any yet. Out of all the diapers the only ones we dont seem to care for are the fuzzibunz, but i think it is because they have given us the most leak problems/ possible fit issues. Have fun playing in the world of CD!

  • thanks ladies, this is helpful.  i totally forgot about the existence of the JD trial. i will go check that out!

i also have a great place that is local to me that lets you try out one, use it, wash it and return it if you don't like it so i may try another kind through them.
