Cereal at 4 months or 6 months?

I think my Dr. starts talking solids (rice cereal at least) at our 4 month appointment, but Kellymom.com is pretty adament about only breast milk until 6 months.

Anyone know the pros / cons? What is your plan?

Also, I have seen a few things about making your own baby oatmeal cereal for way cheaper and healthier than the processed thoughts (I believe it's as easy as getting non-instant oats and putting them in the food processor).

Thoughts?

Re: Cereal at 4 months or 6 months?

  • 6 months.  No earlier.  And, if neither of these are present at 6 months, when he can sit up on his own without support and has lost the tongue-thrust reflex.

My pedi suggested 4 months but I shot it down.  She's cool with it.

  • I started adding organic rice cereal (one tablespoon per 4oz. bottle) at three and a half months and have had absolutely no issues.

In fact, he spits up less, has less tummy aches/gas, and sleeps better. Happier baby overall!

I guess it reall depends on your LO and what you feel they are ready for.

We're trying rice this week. There are signs to look for in an article I found by Dr Sears and Wyatt is demonstrating most of them. We'll see how it goes. I'm finding it hard to believe that 1 TBS of rice cereal and 3 TBS of BM is going to ruin him for life.

Yes, exactly. My Wyatt was meeting all those "milestones" as well for being ready for solid foods.

Let me know how it goes! Good luck!

    You can find it here.

For clarification purposes, this doesn't violate the new link rules because it's not a retailer or vendor of any kind.

Thanks! Our first attempt went pretty well. He's still giving me Sir Crankifuss this afternoon but the feeding was pretty easy. He seemed to enjoy the taste from my finger and did well with the runny mixture on a spoon.

No kidding. It's driving me nuts. All it takes is for a few people to ruin a good thing- which is why they're cracking down on the policy now.

  • Our doctor suggested rice cereal at 4 months.  If she is meeting the milestones then we will move forward.

On another note...I believe I read that oat cereal is more likely to cause food allergies.  Has anyone else read this.  I believe it is why it is suggested to start with rice cereal.

To the OP...I plan on making my own rice cereal and other baby foods.  There is a website that explains how to and gives recipes.

Techie, can I post the link?  It doesn't sell anything but there are advertisements on the site.

  • Yeah, rice cereal is the easiest of them to digest with the least likelihood of allergy.

Yep, it's ok to link that. Reference material seems to be ok.
