Babies: 0 - 3 Months

Let's talk sleep schedules for LO...

Okay...so my sweet angel is almost 2 weeks old and I have noticed he sleeps (at nighttime) about every 2-3 hours.  He then wakes on his own, I change his diaper, he feeds and then goes back to sleep most of the time. Also, I EBF right now.

For example:

9 pm - feed, back to sleep

11 pm - diaper change, feed, back to sleep at 11:40pm

2 am-  diaper change, feed, back to sleep at 2:40 am

5 am - diaper change, feed, awake until 7 am

7:15 am - sleep until 10:30 am, etc....

So...how do I get him to start taking at least 4 hour stretches at nighttime?  I see so many posts of moms who have LO's who sleep 4+ hours at night.

Or...do I just keep with his schedule?

TIA!

  • Stick with his schedule for now. He's a week old and trying to figure out things. When he's a little older he'll start regulating on his own and you can work on a schedule.

EBF babies need to feed more often as breastmilk digests faster and more easily than formula. It'll work out soon. Keep in mind that while this feels like it's endless, it's a very short period of time in the grand scheme of things.

  • I would say longer night sleep comes with age. Right now, he needs to eat that often, so every 2-3 hours is pretty normal. DD probably started sleeping 4 hours at night around 4 weeks of age, and is up to 5-7 hours at night (followed by a 3-4 hour stretch) now that she is 9 weeks old.

  • At 2 weeks, that schedule is completely normal.  It wasn't until about 4-5 weeks before DS started sleeping longer stretches of 4 to 5 hours. Give it time, your LO will get there.

  • This schedule was very typical for my DD at 2 weeks.  Even now, at 8 weeks, she still has nights where she wakes every 2 1/2 - 3 hours to breastfeed.  Though, she also is more often having 4-5 hour stretches of sleep.  I'm just going with the flow, trying to establish a routine, but not pushing it.  I know the consistent longer sleep stretches will come with time.

This. DS was the same at 2 weeks old.  In the last few weeks, DS has gradually gotten in a  pattern where he sleeps longer stretches at night and tends to go back to sleep after overnight feedings right away (or at least, pretty easily). Right now he goes about 3 hours between feedings during the day with some awake/play time inbetween time. At night, he'll go about 4-5 hours between feedings, and goes right back to sleep.

  • My little one is about 3 1/2 weeks, and I have almost the same sleep/feed schedule as you have going as well. At night, she tends to sleep anywhere from 2 1/2 to 3 1/2 hours before she gets hungry and screams her face off (though she is formula fed instead).  I can't wait for a little more sleep! :)

  • follow his lead.  it sounds pretty normal to me for the age.  you can make sure he's not sleeping any longer than three hour stretches during the day.  wake him and try to keep him up for at least an hour (during day).  over time he will develop the ability to sleep for longer stretches.  some babies are able to do it earlier, but most aren't.  until then, just hang in there!

You wait until he's ready to do it. Follow your baby's schedule and cues.Your baby is too young for a schedule.

The moms whose babies sleep longer are typically older babies. Plus many babies that are as young as yours need to feed every 2-3 hours. I woke up my EBF daughter every 2.5-3 hours until she was almost a month old and she started sleeping 5+ hours on her own starting at about 5-6 weeks. She now sleeps stretches of 8 hours and last night she slept 10 hours, woke at ate, then went back to bed for 3.5 hours.
