School-Aged Children

Jumping over VERY early to ask an "independence" question

Sorry to jump YEARS ahead, but FI and I were talking the other day and it got me thinking...

When did you start having your LO get themselves up in the morning?  When do they start to get themselves dressed?  When do they take a shower by themselves?

Obviously I have  a long time to figure it out for my own LO, but we were just curious what the normal age range is for these sort of independent activities.

TIA (way... A)

  • DS was 5 years old when he started taking his own shower and using his own alarm clock.

  • DS has been taking his own bath since he was 4, started waking up with an alarm clock when he started kindergarten (he wanted one).  He's been dressing himself for longer than I remember.

  • My girls all wake themselves up (4, 7, and 10) but only the 10 y/o has an alarm.  They all get themselves dressed/showered but the 4y/o still needs help with her bath and they all need periodic reminders to keep them on track.

  • Bathing/showering:  When my kids were around 3.5 or 4 I would supervise them and perhaps help a bit, esp with hair washing while they scrubbed themselves in the tub, then go about my business while they played in the water.  Around age 5, I started both my kids transitioning to showering on their own.  Right now my son is 6, and he can shower on his own except that I have to make sure he's rinsed his hair.

Getting up:  My kids began waking to an alarm clock when they started school in the morning.  It's SO much easier to get them an alarm clock than to have to go in and fight them to get up!

Dressing:  My kids could dress themselves in clothes I laid out for them around age 3.  My DD quickly showed interest in picking out her own clothes.  My son will pick out his own clothes if I don't do it, but isn't really driven to choose his own outfits.  Some mornings I lay out his clothes while he pees and brushes teeth.  Other mornings I'm busy and he has to select clothes for himself.

HTH!  And don't worry about doing research ahead of time.  Seriously, I feel like it's been a blink since my youngest was 4 months.

Wow, I hadn't even thought of getting my daughter an alarm clock yet but I really should.  She is 6 and I just wake her up in the morning.  I definitely never thought of having her start and get in a shower without any kind of assistance.  Maybe I am babying her...  (She does bathe herself, but I fill up the bath or turn the shower on for her and make sure the temp is good.)
