bleeding from teething?

When I got DD up this morning, her sheet and favorite stuffed bear were covered in spots of blood.  I can't find a single wound on her bigger than a papercut.  Could it be from a molar trying to push through?  She has NEVER bled like this before, and I can't figure out what is causing the problem to fix it.  I'm kinda skeered to stick my fingers in her mouth and poke around for fear of the 9 or 10 teeth I know she does have, and she's not really in a cooperative mood.  (Poor thing left a small puddle of tears on the floor this morning because she was so upset.)

Re: bleeding from teething?

  • Molars and eye teeth caused a some bleeding for DS, so it probably is that.  Or, she had a bit of a bloody nose last night.  DS gets those when it's dry too.

  • M had a little bit of bleeding from his first teeth pushing through the gums. He didn't bleed all over everything though. The only reason I noticed is because he was eating a rice cracker, and I noticed there were red spots on it.

Could she have had a nose bleed during the night?

  • Not sure about teething (my girls never bled from that - at least not that I ever noticed) but maybe a bloody nose. My DD2 woke up a month ago absolutely covered in blood. Turns out the combo of dry heat in the house and the deconsgestant we gave her (and probably some picking!) really did her in. I nearly had a heart attack when I walked into the bathroom to see her face covered in blood since I didn't know what it was from at first. Turns out, jsut a bloody nose.

Maybe she sneezed and sprayed spots of blood around?

  • Poor thing! I had no idea teething could cause bleeding.

  • Sometimes DS's lips crack & bleed during the night from it being dry :( Usually there isn't much evidence on his face in the AM, but I find it on the sheets, my shirt, etc.
  • Neither of my kids bled from teething, but it sounds like a good explanation.  I second the chapped/cracked lips, though.  I'll find blood on DS's crib sheet, and sometimes on DD's pillow.  Now I know to check their lips, usually toward the inside of their mouths.  I put some baby-friendly lip stuff on DD that helps, and DS has a cool mist humidifier that makes a difference.

  • I never would have thought of a bloody nose, since I never get them.  I got out her humidifier, so we'll see if there is a repeat performance tonight.  (I hope not - I haven't managed to wash the bloody sheet from last night and we only have two.)

  • This happens to Snuggle too when a new tooth arrives.  In fact, I usually use it as confirmation that a tooth has broken his gum.

  • I never saw any blood from teething but like pp we get bloody noses sometimes.  Maggie has always been more prone to them but Molly has had one.  Although for us when they were little like Molly's age it ended up looking like a massacre happened in the crib come morning.
