Caffeine

I know most doctors say some caffeine is ok...just wanted to see how many out there have completely cut it out?

I'm trying really hard to cut it completely but haven't been successful yet! How many caffeinated drinks is everyone having a day?

Re: Caffeine

  • I have been keeping it at one or two caffeinated sodas (12 oz is around 30-55 mg) OR one coffee drink. Here's a link from MOD which I thought was pretty trustworthy.

  • Maybe one soda per week.  Today was the first time I've had coffee since November.
  • I cut it out completely, but I was hardly drinking any while TTC, so it was pretty easy for me.

  • I drink one cup of tea in the morning and sometimes a half glass of soda in the evening. I was wondering about the effects of caffeine earlier this morning after having tea and then listening with my doppler and noticing that the baby had a rather high rate heartbeat (around 170) and it made me wonder if it was somehow related to the caffeine.

  • I cut it out 100% in the first tri. Now I have a can of soda at lunch time...mostly because I've started developing headaches and my Dr. suggested caffeine to help with the headaches. It makes a huge difference. Also helps me get through the afternoon at work.

  • I have on average 2 to 3 cans of pop a day. Sometimes I don't have any but usually I have at least 1 or 2. With DD I cut it out completely till 30 weeks and I was so dead tired all the time I needed the caffeine to be able to stay awake to eat.
  • I allow myself a can of Pepsi a day (I'm a Pepsi addict...yes I know it's horrible for me.  haha) but I usually only have one or two a week.  I cut it out completely with my first pregnancy.
  • I had cut it out completely until a couple weeks ago - then I started having maybe one or two fountain pops or iced teas a week (plus whatever chocolate I eat!).

  • I've cut it out completely, with the exception of chocolate.

  • I wasn't drinking much caffeine before getting pregnant. Regular coffee makes me too jittery, so I stick with decaf coffee when we go out, and I have a couple cups of decaf tea in the morning. I have, however, started drinking a can or a glass of regular Coke everyday.  Not great, I know, but it's the one thing I crave, and it didn't really start until my 2nd trimester.  I had been drinking one can of caffeine-free Diet Dr. Pepper (and had for a long while) a day, but after getting pregnant, it made me feel off.  And then withe the recent study that was announced a few weeks ago that diet soda isn't really good to have at all....well I just decided to stick with the regular stuff.
  • BTW, here's a useful calculator that can help you stay below the 200 mg a day mark:

  • I only ever had the occasional latte before I got pregnant, so I just switched to a non-caffeinated beverage when I hit Starbucks (love the Rooibus Vanilla Tea Latte!). I never drank soda anyway and I don't count chocolate. : )

I am, however, thinking of re-introducing the odd latte here and there since it seems to be something that is fine, so I figure why not, especially now that I am in 2nd tri.

    Great info!

  • Everything is fine in moderation.

I typically have 1 iced tea or Dr. Pepper a day. (major cravings of mine)

I then will typically have a few pieces of chocolate.

  • 1-2 cups of coffee a day, or sometimes 1 cup of coffee and a diet soda if we're out to dinner
  • I had cut it out of my diet a couple years before I got pregnant, so fortunately it was one less thing I had to give up!

  • One Dr. Pepper a day.  I'm an addict!  Sometimes I will have a glass of iced tea.

I have a small chai tea latte from starbucks (my doc ok'ed this with me) a couple times a week in the morning with a huge bottle of water.  And since being pregnant I have had maybe 3 sodas (all in moderation).  No chocolate - haven't really wanted it either.

  • I'll admit, I'm a sweet tea-aholic...I have a Nalgene bottle at work since they "went green" and started charging a quarter for a cup....I fill that with ice to the brim, then with sweet tea...yea I know it sounds awful, but with all the ice in it I'm probably only getting around 12-14oz of actual liquid. After that though I switch to water for the rest of the day, even at home.

I *rarely* drink soda, but I rarely drank it before my BFP; and "leaded" coffee makes me shake like a crack addict, so I've been drinking decaf for years; though I find that I'm maybe enjoying a cup once a month or so...

This is the same as me.  I will only do one of these a day, if that.  Mostly I'm drinking hot (decaf) tea in the morning and water in the afternoon.  I would say on average, 3-4 caffeinated drinks per week.

  • I don't drink coffee or tea, nor do I have chocolate very often at all. That said, I'm a HUGE Dr. Pepper addict (don't judge... it's my only vice).

I've cut way down for the pregnancy. I try to have none, but I don't always make it. Usually 0-1 cans, but on really stressful days or when I'm feeling really crappy it might be 2 (sipping it helps with headaches & nausea for me).

Me too!  I still drink one Pepsi a day.  My Dr is not concerned.  I don't drink coffee, which she says packs more of a caffeine wallop.

  • I have a latte every morning.
  • The most I have is one diet coke a day--sometimes its every other day depending on how I'm feeling.  My doc says it's fine so I'm not worried

  • I'm not a big soda drinker, but I love my coffee. When I found out I was pregnant, I stopped coffee completely for a few months and then decided to give decaf a try. It's not bad at all and I think it's more of a habit for me anyways. If I do have pop I make sure it's caffeine free. With coffee (decaf) when I do drink it, I probably have 16-24 oz in one day, but it's not everyday of the week.

  • I cut it out completely until my doctor recommended a little bit when I had a bad headache. So now I just have a little glass here and there to help my headaches.
