The Bump has it's priorities all.jacked.up.

(And no, there is no significance for me regarding the board this is linked from.  I found it on BOTB.)

However the post did clear up why the heck I have a forever rotating PG woman as my avitar...and why the heck I can not FIX IT.  Ahhh the powers of the *!

  • I think my avatar got fixed.

I can't believe y ou can get banned for posting a link to an etsy site.  They would have to announce a change like that.  Plus, just post a tinyurl and you'll be fine.  :)

  • Seriously??  Nice...I just posted some Etsy links on the CD board for someone who might enjoy them, so I'll have to hope that's not caught by the Bump Secret Police.  That's absolutely ridiculous that they can have a board sponsored by Pampers yet I can't say "look at the awesome _____ I got" and answer publicly when someone asks where, since other people might be interested too.  I really don't have the time to PM everyone, potentially, ya know?  Stupid stupid stupid.  I thought these forums were designed to help moms, not be a pain in the azz.

This exactly! I understand not being able to promote your own site, but when you come on here and say, "I need carseat recs," or "where do you get cute knit hats for babies?", it is lame that people can't point you in a specific direction! And it makes no sense!

  • OK, I'll be the target... can someone explain to me why is it messed up for the bump to put it's priorities into protecting it's TOS rather than something as trivial as fixing a 1/2 inch square picture?

The Bump is a business, a business funded by advertising, why is it so wrong for them to want to protect that? They are offering these boards to us as a free service, a courtesy, one in which we all agreed to certain terms before joining. We vote with our wallets and this board has voted not to support the paid advertisers. I see nothing wrong with the bump trying to make money off their business by requiring that advertisers pay and preventing people from advertising for free. Just my two cents.

Edit to go the non-snarky route.

It's because they're now cracking down on people who use any and all external vendor links, not just people pimping their own etsy sites.

That means Amazon.com, zulily, Groupon, etc. and so forth.

They're shooting themselves in the foot with this because how many times have any of us asked for a recommendation for something and had someone shoot back with "here's a link to something that sounds similar".

We wouldn't be able to do that anymore.

I see your point but I think you and I will just have to agree to disagree. It probably and over reaction on the bumps part, but the users probably dug their own grave in this instance by using the boards for personal advertising. And I still don't understand all the hoopla over the avatars.

I agree, but I have baby brain, which is why I'm back at this place, lol. Maybe I'll check out Babycenter. I used to love it over there w/ my first daughter.

Here's what irks me. The bump gods rarely catch this stuff on their own. It's not a priority for them to check every link in sigs (I'd guess at least 1/2 of the bumpies link to something in their sig), so who are these fellow bumpies reporting people? That's what bugs me. That there are some lame-o "Dwights from The Office" running around reporting people... and for what? Not money. Not notoriety, not anything, except the smug satisfaction that they got someone banned. It seems so wrong and ass kissy. Not my style at all.  Confused

Nobody is above the rules here.  Just like others have been temporarily banned, warned, etc for links in their signatures to their business, you also are not allowed to have links in your signature.  I sent you a PM about this a few months ago and you disguised it as a link to your "blog."  Then, once again I sent you a PM about this and you again tried to disguise this as a picture.  No one is allowed to have links to their business in their signature.  It's not ass kissy for people to complain, when everyone else on this board, and all boards has to follow these rules.  You are not exempt.

  • I did not direct anything at you IheartStuart. I took out my website link and Facebook link when you asked me to a few months ago. I thought it was odd that the second I show up on the Seattle board you were on my case about it. I've been on the national boards for four years and never have had any issues.

Regarding disguising things. Have you looked at my blog? Its a personal & professional blog. I have had it in my sig on the bump for 3 years. I didn't disguise anything, it said "Blog", it is a blog. Very nondescript, like I said via PM. I don't know you or know why you are so hell bent on enforcing the rules (particularly on a Seattle board, when you live in Houston...?), but relax. This is a message board, it's not life or death, it's not serious. I am as open as they come and no I didn't disguise anything w/ a photo. I PM'ed you back and said "I am taking out the link to my blog but I'll leave the link in my photo." I was 100% up front.

The rules say you shouldn't be able to figure out what someone does for a living by looking at their siggy... and well, I don't think a photo of my daughter gives anything away, except that I am a mom. I even watermarked it w/ my bump name.

That's the last I am going to say about this...please avoid my posts if you have a personal problem with me.

  • 3 things:

    1. Mike&Care - you probably aren't aware of the massive shitstorm that we had here (shortly before you started posting on the Seattle board) specifically involving Bumpie photogs.  So if you've felt targeted from the get go, that's probably why.

    2. I get that The Bump sells ad space and that those advertisers want to make money.  But not allowing anyone to post vendor or product links of any kind is taking it WAY too far.

    3. I promise to remove the links from my siggy just as soon as I'm able to edit my siggy without it reverting to what I had a year ago.  I'd like the legal pieces of what I currently have to remain, but I can't get the correct code because it's showing me my siggy from last Easter.

I am sure nothing was directed at me.  I'll just address the things you pointed out here.  I'm not sure why, if you took your links out a few months ago, how the link to your web site showed up again recently.  The whole point of a "moderator" is to keep an eye out and make sure the rules of TOS are being followed so when I saw you had another link, I again sent you a PM letting you know that nothing in your signature can be linked to your business.  So, you took it out and then instead of just letting it go, you made your picture a link to your blog. Look, this is not a vendetta against you.  Don't take it personally.  We've had issues on this board with regs who have had links to their photography pages on here getting temp. banned and it ended up causing a huge ordeal last year so it wouldn't be fair to let you keep a link in your signature when everyone else had to take theirs down and had to suffer the consequences.

I'm from Seattle, but don't worry about my location.  I'm not even sure why you are even bringing that up.  I'm not sure why you are taking this so personally either.  It's not an "attack" to let you know when you are breaking TOS. I have no problem with you.  I don't even know you.  But when it gets brought to my attention that you are breaking rules, It's my job to handle it.  Unfortunately, I am a mod and can't "avoid" your posts but I don't have a problem with you.  I'm sure you are a great person and you are just reacting like this because you feel attacked.  Just keep in mind, everyone here has to follow the same rules.  If someone else does this, they will get the same warnings.  It's not "life or death" but there are rules, and if you post here you are acknowledging that you agree to follow them.

Actually I hadnn't thought of any of this and you make great points.

Is it taking it too far to disallow any outside links?  Maybe, in fact probably, but they have to draw the line somewhere and how do you say "yes to recomendations only, and no to everything else"?  And when they are trying to sell ad space, they have to inforce rules to meet advertisers requests.

Unfortunate as it is, I can see why, but we don't have to agree to it.

  • I finally have my computer back after three days - yay! So I'm late to this one, but my two issues with this are:

    1. Prior to the mod post on our own board, it was hearsay. Or rather...look at what's going on over there, and it wasn't made clear by who should have posted it: Bump Eileen (or one of the other employees).

    2. One of the benefits of building a community is to learn from other people's experiences and knowledge. Recommendations Nurseries and Baby Gear board is going to do since that's what a lot of the posts center around.
