1st Trimester

1st trimester. . .twins!?

My husband and I just had our first prenatal appointment yesterday and during the ultrasound we found out we're expecting twins!!  This is so incredible and we're so thrilled because we miscarried twins last summer and I never thought we'd have the chance to have them again!

Re: 1st trimester. . .twins!?

  • That's so awesome!! How exciting! Do twins run in your family??

  • I have twins all over in my family on both sides. My dad's great great grandmother had 3 sets! I also have several aunts with twins on both my mom and dad's sides.

So exciting!!  Now to figure out names. . . my husband doesn't want to find out the sexes so we'll have to have quite a few options/combinations since they are fraternal!

  • how far along are you?

  • I have 15 month old twin fraternal girls, and am pregnant with twins again, but they think I may have lost one we can't find one heartbeat. Congrats check out the multiples board they are awesome. Also they can not tell they are fraternal this early on even twins with one sac and one placenta each can be identical. Alot of U/S techs make that mistake.
  • congrats! Double the fun!!

  • Congrats!! Please come join us on the multiples board--it's a wonderful resource! I'd also suggest getting a copy of Dr. Luke's When You're Expecting Twins, Triplets or Quads--it gives lots of detailed info regarding carrying multiples!

Please feel free to ask me any questions. Wishing you a healthy, uncomplicated pg!!

That's actually not true... if they are dizygotic, diamniotic twins, they are fraternal - two separate ova fertilized by two separate sperm.  They have separate amnion sacs, and two placentas they can call them fraternal via U/S.

    And I am an U/S tech! :)

Not true - if the single egg splits very early, the twins can be identical and also each have their own sac and their own placenta.  So there really is no way to know for sure unless they are b/g twins or after birth.

    Right.

WTF are they teaching u/s techs?

I had di/di ID twins.  Explain that u/s tech.

  • The midwife could tell based on an ultrasound and the fact that they are each in their own sac and there is a thick barrier between each sac. If they were identical they could share a sac, or still have separate sacs but the space between the two would be much much thinner, showing that the egg split.
  • I had figured almost 8.5 weeks, but the DR gave me a new due date and put me a little further back, about 7- 7.5 weeks.
