Catholic Baptism Question

I was raised Catholic but was married in a Methodist faith (because the Catholic church doesn't allow outdoor weddings and we wanted to have an outdoor ceremony).

We are now talking about Baptism's for LO and I'm wondering, do we (DH and I) need to be married in the Catholic church in order for LO to be baptized there?  I'm going to be talking to a deacon on Friday but was wondering if anyone on here had any ideas before I get to actually speak to someone about it.

  • that's not a requirement at our church.  H and I were married by an interfaith minister at a episcopalian (sp?) church  because I did not want to wait for H's annulment.  MJ will be christened in a Roman catholic church. .

  • No but for our area one parents needs to be a member of the parish the child will be baptized in, my DH is Lutheran so obviously couldn't join my church unless he converted. I am not sure if that is a normal thing though or not.

  • It depends on the church. Here you do need to be married in a Catholic church in order to baptize your child in that faith. But I know the parish down the road you don't.
DD(9)DD(5.5)DS(3)DS(born 2/1/11) July 2006, lost a baby at 8 weeks, natural miscarriage , May 2009 lost Zoe Eliana at 17 weeks no reason known, possible under developed organs. Lost two more babies in September 2009 at 7 wks 4 days. Had myomectomy surgery to remove a large fibroid in November 2009.
  • I am not married at all, and DD is beiing baptized in the catholic church. I'm catholic and FI isn't, all we have to do is take a class (lasts 2 hours).

Is this common?  DH is Catholic and wants DS baptized, but he doesn't belong to any church, so I'm wondering if he can get DS baptized regardless?

It depends on your parish.. I'm not married and my priest said no. Also because he doesn't see me around church (well duh, I live 2 hrs from my home parish because I'm at school), he also said I had to be confirmed, which I am (he confirmed me, thanks for remembering). Plus with the godparents we chose only one is Catholic. So I'm just getting her baptized in a Christian church... haven't fully looked into it yet though.

  • Everyone else already answered, but I thought I would add...we are both Catholic and wanted an outdoor ceremony so were married by a Methodist Pastor. So the Nun we met with to set up the Baptism with just tried to talk us into having our marriage recognized in the Catholic church. It is a small ceremony that the Priest performs. We opted not to at this time, but I just thought I should mention it to you. ;) What I have learned over the years is that anything comes with a price...or should I say donation.hehe.

For us only one godparent needs to be Catholic. We chose my brother who is Catholic but my SIL is Lutheran.
