How many inches is your (non existant) waist?

When you measure around your belly button, how many inches are you now? How many weeks are you?

I know everyone is different but I'm trying to figure out what is "average" or "normal".  Everyone in my life that I've seen in the last month is telling me how "tiny" I look - lovely compliment, normally, but now it's got me freaked out that my baby isn't growing right.  And at my doctor today they said I hadn't gained any weight in the last month, which doesn't seem right!

I'm about 40" around and hit 31 weeks tomorrow.

Thanks for reassuring a neurotic, first-time mom!

  • I don't think this will be helpful.  It's going to depend upon how big the waist was to begin with.  For example, if my waist is 40" but I was 35" pre-pregnancy, it means I haven't gotten very large, but if my waist used to be 25" then I've grown a lot!

  • 45 inches, 29 weeks

I was a size 10/12 pre preg.  My starting weight was 160 and I'm about 190 right now.

  • 41 at my belly button and I'm a little over 28 weeks.

Agreed.  It's like asking the board, "What do you weigh today?  I want to see if I'm on track."

  • I haven't measured at all. I don't even think about doing that.

On the tiny/ no weight gain thing, I lost weight during first and second tri. I'm still a pound or two under my pre-pg weight. I was also measuring small at the doctors office so she started worrying and sent me in for a growth scan. Turns out that not only is my baby healthy and happy in there but she is also measuring a few days ahead! Everyone carries differently. If your doctor was getting really concerned then he or she would talk to you about it or send you in for a scan.

  • I have no desire to know how big my "waist" is!  Let me just believe that I'll always have a 28" waist.  Angel
  • I'm measuring an impressive 42" at 27 1/2 weeks
  • Yeah, I don't think comparing measurements around the belly button is going to help you any as people are built so differently. My doctor usually does a uterus measurement (top to bottom) at every appointment, that would probably give you more information.

I'm at a bit of a standstill with weight this month too and my doctor wasn't concerned. I'm sure if your doctor was worried, they'd send you in for a growth scan, so try not to worry about it!

  • I'm nearly 32 weeks and my waist is measuring at an ENORMOUS 50 1/2 inches around my belly button!  I have been asked a million times through this pregnancy if I am having twins or triplets...which I am not.  Pre pregnancy I was wearing a size 10 for jeans, so whatever that works out to be in inches is how much I've grown.  I feel as though I've also put on a lot of weight, more than I should have.  Weighing 154lbs pre pregnancy and a whopping 194lbs this morning!
  • Thank you all... I know my fundal measurement is exactly where it's supposed to be, heartbeat is fine, and my doctor doesn't seem concerned... so I should probably just relax, right? :)

I have a sonogram scheduled for Friday, just to make sure, which I suspect was done more because my doc could tell I was nervous than because she was.

  • I don't think they have a tape measure large enough!!

The fundal measurement is VERY different from how many inches around you are!

  • I am 28.5 weeks, "measuring perfectly" per my doctor, my waist is around 31" but I was 25" prior to pregnancy. I can't wait to see how big it will be near the end!
  • Currently I am 37.5" (30 weeks).  Pre-pregnancy my waist was 28".   I am really missing being 28" right now.

  • I just measured and my "waist" is 43", about 2" bigger than last week.  But I just ate a big meal, so I'm sure that has something to do with it.  I'm 29wks and change.

  • I'm at 35" and 28 weeks along. I wouldn't worry, I'm finally back to my pre-preg weight, so technically have gained nothing and I have major growth issue possibilities due to a blood disorder so I get ultrasounds every 2 weeks. Even being this small baby is measuring great, even a few days ahead. So the size of YOU has nothing to do with the size of BABY. When your fundal measurement starts to fall off then you can worry.

  • Mines at 38" and I'm 28 weeks and 3 days. Speaking of our bellies...I had a lady tell me the other day that for being due in May my belly was not very big. Ok thats a nice compliment. Until she went on to say it is probably because you have nice wide hips!!!! what the heck! Why would you say that to a stranger. Lol I know she meant well she was a little short in the english speaking department but still. I know I don't have the smallest butt and thighs but do you have to point it out. lol

  • Thank you everyone! I know everyone is different, but hearing that at least SOME other women have bellies roughly my size, roughly near where I am, makes me feel better.

And I'm sure the u/s tomorrow will confirm everything is fine. :)

  • I was 37" at 8 weeks (35" when not pregnant) and I'm 42 1/2" now at almost 28 weeks. And I'm 6'0" tall.
