Weaning LO from paci to sleep

**posted on 3-6 month too.

Hi Everyone!

I need to wean DS from using a paci to sleep.  He is really good  about going to sleep as soon as I lay him down but has become very dependent on the paci to sleep.  This is not a huge problem for naps but is for night time sleep.  He wakes several times a night and at first I thought it was his swaddle but really it's him looking for his paci.  I guess when he wakes himslef up he needs his paci to go back to sleep.  I dont want him to rely on it as a sleep aid so I took off of work a few days so I can be at home and begin the weaning process.  Any tips??  I dont mind him using it during wake times...its the sleep association I want to clear up.

  • I would just take it away completely.  I am doing it soon too.  There will probably be crying but you can comfort him other ways while he's crying.

  • I honestly think if you take it away right now it will make things worse.
DS went through the spell where he'd fuss, and all he wanted was his paci and he'd go right back to sleep.  We just went with it.  Sometimes sadly, 3-4 times a night.  And eventually he got over the fetish, and actually has now learned to put it back in himself!
I just think if he's addicted already, taking it away all together will just make him REALLY not sleep at all.

  • Thanks for the advice ladies!!  Much appreciated!
  • When I weaned my oldest, he chewed through them so I had to stop cold turkey and it worked.
  • I took the paci away from DS on Monday and he hasn't used it since. He only uses it for naps and bedtime, so he got really fussy but I was able to calm him down and get to sleep within 20 minutes usually. The 2nd day was harder but today hasn't been that bad. I suggest you go cold turkey and he will forget about it in 2-3 days.

Here's hoping the best for both of us.

We had the same problem and took it away cold turkey at 5 months. At the same time we also started a one arm swaddle so she could soothe herself. Worked great! She started sleeping well pretty much right away and forgot about the paci within 2-3 days.

  • Hang in there.  I was at my wits end with the same problem and it clicked for my son at 6 months.  He was able to get it in and out on his own.  Just keep giving it to him and encourage/help him to put it in on his own.  I also throw a handfull of them in there at night.
