Having an induction soon...scared

I am having an induction in about 10 days and am wondering if anyone else has some tips/advice for me? I have borderline high blood pressure which is why I am being induced. Any tips would be great..thanks!

  • Relax so that you can enjoy it! YES enjoy! It's a beautiful wonderful thing. The hospital staff and your doc will make sure that you are comfortable and progress well. Don't let the specter of pitocin scare you....it's not that bad. Just ask for help if you are in pain. Be ready for a potentially longer labor than moms who aren't induced...but you will get there, and in the end have a beautiful baby in your arms. It is so worth it....  Good luck!

  • I was induced. I didn't need Cervadil because I was already about 2cm and 75% effaced so they just used Pitocin. I would say that unless you have an amazing tolerance for pain, prepare yourself for an epidural. Pit contractions are no joke. I always had terribly bad cramps with my periods growing up so I expected to last longer than I did before requesting my epi. But aside from some difficulties related to the epi and the umbilical cord, I had a relatively quick (6hrs from start to finish) labor. Good luck!

  • I had an induction for the same reason, it wasn't bad at all! The first part of the day was boring even:) my goal,in addition to having a healthy baby, was to avoid an epidural, and I was able to do that. It was a long day, the pitocin was started at about 8am and I didn't deliver till almost midnight, but it wasn't scary or negative in any way.it was kind of nice to know the day we would have to go to the hospital, that way we could plan for a pet sitter and arrange time off work in advance Good luck!
  • I was induced after my water broke at 36 weeks and contractions didn't start spontaneously after 8 hours. They started pitocin at 8 am on monday, I asked for an epi at 4 pm. The induction didn't work for me and I stalled at 4 or 5 cm and ended up with a c-section at 5 pm on Tuesday.

  • I've been induced twice and it's not bad at all!

The 1st time was for pre-e, so I had lots of other stuff going on but the 2nd was because DD was past her due date and I had a great experience!

I don't have anything to compare the contractions to, and they are painful, but it wasn't as bad as I was expecting.  Because DS came very quickly after the pit. was started, they gave me the epi very quickly with DD.  She didn't arrive until 3.5 hours after the epi, so I had a nice comfortable day of hanging out and waiting.

As PP said, just enjoy it...it beats wondering if your water is going to break at work or if you're going to get to the hospital in time. :)

  • I was induced after my water broke, so it might be a little different, but my delivery was easy peasy. I definitely needed the epidural, but after that it was smooth sailing.
    The DC Nest. Winers welcome.

  • I was induced (for a different reason) and it was pretty easy.  They started the pit around 6:30am (I had cervidil the night before), nothing really happened until 8pm-ish and DS was born at 11:07pm.  It was pretty boring up until 9  when I went from 2cm to 10 in 45 min.  That sucked.  But otherwise I had a good experience.

I think you just need to be patient.  I expected to walk in, start the pit and pop out a baby a few min later.   It seems like it might work that way for some folk though!

I agree with PPs - I really liked knowing when I was going to have the baby and not worried if I was going to make it to the hospital on time (and all of those other FTM fears!)

Good luck!  Looking forward to pics!

  • I had an induction with DD and had already (painlessly) reaced 5 cm.  I didn't need cervadil, and from the time pitocin was started to when she arrived was less than 4 hours.  I was doing fine with the pitocin at first, even telling the nurse she could increase the dose because I could barely feel contractions.  She must've doubled it, because they came on pretty quickly and strong (word of warning: be careful what you say!).  I finally asked for the epi, but I was in transition and the anesthesiologist couldn't get to me in time - I felt the need to push, so I went without.

To compare, I went into labor on my own with DS (already about 4 cm) and had an 8-hour med-free labor, and I think it hurt just as much as my induction did.  So any pain management techniques you have in mind might be enough if you hope to go med-free.

Talk with your DH about what sort of interventions you're willing to allow, how both of you feel about a c-section, your ideal timeline, etc. so that you're on the same page.  When you're "in the moment" and in pain or tired or whatever, it can be easy to just sign off on whatever the professionals are telling you.  On the other hand, you can prepare only so much your first L&D experience because you have nothing to compare it to.  So have an open mind and try to pep-talk yourself now to avoid any potential discouragement in the process, especially if it seems to take longer than you'd expected (I know my experience wasn't the norm).  Good luck!!

  • You can do it!

    One message: Enjoy it!

Go out to dinner the night before you have to go to the hospital and have fun just the two of you.

During the BIG day, just remember every moment.

I was terrified and couldn't believe that is was as easy as it was. I was convinced I would have to go the C-section route, prepping my husband for a couple of weeks. Then low and behold, a vaginal delivery!
