Hi everyone! I am in need of some mommy help. For the first 7 months of DS's life--I was very much on my game when it came to feeding. I introduced solids at 5 months and everything was great. Then, my in laws moved in with us. My MIL, although meaning well, doesn't listen. She wants to make all the baby food, which is really sweet, except everything is pureed. Whenever I try to give DS something a little more solid, she freaks out thinking he is choking and takes it out of his mouth! The only really solid thing he eats regularly is cheerios. So now, I find myself freaked out too because when grandma isn't around I've given him bites of real food and he wont chew it. I want to have "the talk" with my MIL and tell her that we have to start introducing more solid foods, but now I feel kind of lost and don't know what to give him. I like to make things myself--not buy packaged items. Any ideas on how to introduce more solids would be greatly appreciated (menus etc)

Re: Baby Feeding Help
First- inform your MIL that transitioning to solids is an important part of his development. Get your pedi on board if you need backup.
Soft solids (bananas, cooked potatoes, small cooked pasta bits) are great starter foods- mix them in with the purees to give it a bit of texture (making sure they're the right size that can be swallowed). Then start adding more and more texture until he has mastered chewing. If he's handling Cheerios he's already doing really well and you can introduce other soft finger foods.
Your LO definitely should be working on eating more solid finger foods! Of course, every baby/toddler has a different schedule and some take longer then others to adjust to new foods, but they need to be exposed and offered. Check out this link for some ideas:

And I agree with PP, if your MIL is still fighting you on it, get your pedi to back you up. We actually used up the purees we had, but after chatting with the pedi at his 1 year appt, decided that we still needed to give him some fruits and veggie purees until he choose to eat them himself (he suddenly became rather picky with what he would feed himself). What I generally do is to feed him the puree first to make sure he gets the fruit or veggie, then let him have at it with safe finger foods.
