Food Allergies and Allergy Testing

Clearly by my post count you can see I am mostly a lurker but I am hoping to get some insight from any moms who have experiences with allergies and allergy testing.  My DS is being tested in a few days for food allergies, he has had several reactions over the last few weeks and at his 9 month check-up today the pedi strongly recommended testing and prescribed an epi-pen.  Now that he has had reactions and I have experienced how scary they can be I don't want to leave in fear for the next.  Also, does anyone know what I might be able expect at the testing appointment?  Any info, advice, etc.. that can be shared would be great.  Thanks ladies.

Re: Food Allergies and Allergy Testing

  • DD had testing because of her milk/soy allergy and then she had an allergic reaction to penicillin.  They took a history and asked about environmental factors in the home.  Then the doctor told us about the scratch testing and showed me what it felt like on my arm, which was very similar to scratching yourself with a fingernail. Like the type of scratch you do when you itch, not something that would leave a mark.  They then placed the full panel on DD's back at the same time and we waited 15-20 minutes for them to come read it.  She didn't cry, or really pay it much attention at all, and she is a screamer so that's saying something.

  • DD broke out in hives the fourth time she had formula so she had allergy testing.  Basically they draw blood and test for the most common allergens plus anything else you are suspicious of.  For DD they tested dairy, eggs, oats, wheat, soy, peanuts, and carrots (she had carrots at the time she broke out in hives.)  Turns out she was allergic to eggs and dairy.  The blood draw is not easy, but just remember that the crying is usually more from fear and being held down then actual pain.  GL!
  • They'll either do a RAST test, which is the blood draw... or the scratch test. We did the blood draw. DD is allergic to loads of stuff and has had several severe reactions, so carry EpiPens. It's a struggle, but you get through it. It just becomes a way of life.... although we know everyone in our allergists' office too well!
