Success after IF

s/o circumcision(crazy story)don't read if you haven't done yet!

One of DH's coworkers (my former coworker) is married to a nurse in the maternity unit.  She was in the hallway and heard CRAZY screaming.  She walked in and there was a tech (not a nurse) holding a screaming baby who was bleeding everywhere and the dr. was on the floor, passed out, bleeding profusely.  Apparently the dr. experienced an aneurysm while performing the circ, fell over and hit her head and accidentally cut off the baby's penis.  OMG, I FTFO typing this.  Luckily they were able to reattach and the baby shouldn't have any issues.  The dr is still in a coma.  The parents turned out to be billionaires and donated a huge sum of $$ to the hospital in honor of DH's coworker's wife for saving their son.  Holy crap!

Our miracle IVF baby - D 6/09 & J - Surprise! born 9/10!!!

  • Holy crap, that is so awful. I mean, I'm glad they were able to fix it and save the baby, but wow. I know an aneurysm is not a commonplace thing, but makes you think twice about any kind of surgery, right?

  • I remember seeing some news program about something similar that happened several decades ago-- a botched circumcision. In that case, they couldn't (or decided not to) reattach and instead decided, on the recommendations of the doctors, to raise the child as a girl. That turned out to be, of course, a spectacular failure. Once the kid found out (I think during adolescence) he decided to revert to being a boy but of course he had all kinds of issues even years later as an adult. Poor guy.

Um...wait...what? How does lack of penis = vagina? Did they do additional surgery to make his genitals more female like (akin to gender reassignment surgery)? And if not, how did it take that long for the kid to realize? I'm so confused.

(I realize you likely don't know any of the answers, I'm just very confused). What a sad story.

Yeah, exactly. It's a terrible story. I saw it at least 5 years ago on 60 mins or 20/20 or something like that. If I remember correctly they did additional surgery to make it look like a vagina. I'll see if I can find anything via Google.  I want to say it happened in the 50's or 60's.

I think this is the story-- sorry, I don't know how to make a clicky link. Turns out he committed suicide. How tragic.

  • That is crazy. That poor dr. and the poor baby. I am glad DH went with DS during his circ so he could be there "just in case". I Hope that the dr. recovers.

  • Reason # 1001 NOT to have your little boy circumcised:

Doctor might have stroke and accidentally cut the newborn's penis off.

In all seriousness - more babies die from complications related to circumcision than old men do from penile cancer.  It's a surgery with risks like any other surgery.  Thank God this baby will be OK - hope the doctor is too.

    Wheee!
