NBR: talk to me about the Kindle

I am thinking about buying one. We don't have room for a lot of books in my house, and before DS I used to be an avid reader. I really want to start reading again, but when I am at home, I usually run out of time or totally forget to read since there is so much else going on. I am thinking if I had a Kindle, I would use it more (take it with me on trips, to read at work- yes I am allowed to read at work), especially since I can use the kindle app on my phone and pick up wherever I stopped reading last on my phone. So, is it something I can't live without and am living under a rock for not getting one sooner? Oh, and if you have one, which one do you have? the 6" or 9ish" one?

  • I just got a color nook and it rocks. the hubby had a kindle but he's stopped using it. not sure why :

I've heard it is easier to share books with the nook, but since I just got it I can't verify.

you can read the books on your laptop, phone or device too :)

  • I have the 6" one and absolutely love it.  It looks just like a book page when you read it although you do need light to read because the screen isn't lit on its own.  I love that I can read outside in the sun without glare (unlike on my iPhone).  I also love that it syncs with all your other Kindle apps.  For example, when I think about a book that I want to read and I don't have my Kindle with me, I am able to buy it with my phone and then later sync my Kindle with my account and the book will show up on my Kindle. I definitely think it's super convenient and like it much better than having books laying around all over the place.  I think it's worth the $139.

My husband on the other hand much prefers books because of the kind of reading he does.  He reads more non-fiction motivational coaching type books (he's a football coach) and he writes all over them.

You can do this on the Kindle also...your account is connected to them all if you want to use them all.

Ditto all of this... my husband hasn't put his down since I gave it to him at Christmas.  He uses his iPhone app when he doesn't have his Kindle with him, but he seriously takes that Kindle everywhere, and he's blowing through books on it.  I'm just glad that downloading books to the Kindle is so much cheaper than buying them at the store- he is a voracious reader!

He has told me that the $139 for the Kindle was well worth it, and he doesn't need color or Wi-Fi.  As long as you know what you're getting (and not getting?), I think it's well worth the cost.

I'm hoping to get some use out of his Kindle when I start nursing, since I've heard that it's really nice to be able to read with one hand holding it (with books you generally need two hands to turn the page- I had never thought about that).

  • DH and I both have Kindles and LOVE THEM. DH got me a secondhand 2nd generation Kindle for my birthday in July and liked it so much, he bought one for himself. Mine has the 3G, which I like because I can download books anywhere. It's not backlit, which is a plus, since that reduces eye strain (which you get from things that are backlit). It's so convenient and easier to cart around than a bunch of books. So again. LOVE IT!

  • I got one for Valentine's Day, and I love mine!  I hadn't bought one before because I wasn't sure if I would like it - I thought it would be strange to look at a screen instead of actually turning a page.  I actually prefer it because it's really easy to just click the button instead, and it's SO nice to be able to take it with you instead of lugging around actual books.  I have the 6", and I think it's a fine size.  I haven't tried the 9", but to me it seems like it might be too big to hold comfortably.  I have the 3G one, too, and like PP said, you can download books anywhere and the 3G is free.  You can even surf the web - there is a basic web browser.

  • I too held off awhile before getting the kindle but when I got it, I totally regretted not getting one sooner.  In the long run it is much more cost effective.  I love it because of all of the reasons stated above but also I wanted to add that it has saved me time...time I would have wasted going to the book store or waiting for the book to arrive in the mail.  I also love how you are able to preview most of the books before committing to purchasing.  This has also saved me money because I've bought my fair share of books I thought were going to be good but didn't end up being my taste.
  • Well you all have me sold. Now I know what I am buying myself with part of my tax return!

  • I'm LOVING the Kindle.  I like how light it is.  I've read 5-6 books since I got it for Christmas (including some LONG books).  I love that when I'm finished with one book, there's another one right there waiting (that I actually WANT to read).  I love how easy it is to read in bed because it's so light.  I love how easy it is to read in the sun.  While I have a substantial vocabulary, I LOVE scrolling to a new-to-me word and getting the definition right there in the text (yeah, I figured out what it meant from context cues but I'm really liking to read the exact definition)

I don't like how much I'm suddenly spending on books.  The kindle is proprietary and you can't lend/borrow books as easily as it seems like you can with the Nook.  I look for deals and have gotten some free classics and some cheap titles, but I'm spending between $5 and $8 on average.  There are some books I'd like, but they're currently more than I'm willing to spend (especially since I will only read them once)

You can take notes with the Kindle which I LOVE.  I think it would be great if I were taking classes and got my textbooks on the Kindle.  I also like you can see what other people have highlighted/commented on.
