My Dad the Lactivist

I've been meaning to share this story for a while but the post below about nursing in public reminded me of it.

A few months back my sister K and her husband R had come up for a visit and we were all staying with my parents. K & R had been traveling non-stop during the preceding weeks and had just come off a plane when they got to my parents house. One of the first things R said when he saw us was (to DH) "How would you feel if your wife just started breastfeeding on a plane, you know where everyone could see her as they were getting on?" And I looked at him and told him there was NOTHING wrong with that, that breastfeeding was completely natural, and just because I choose to be discrete doesn't mean I hold it against anyone who does. He goes on to be kind of a jerk about the whole thing ("but everyone is looking at your wife's boob!") with my sister backing him up the whole time. This was all within earshot of my dad who just kind of shook his head.

Anyway, this goes on a couple times during the visit and finally on the last night we were out to dinner and I had to feed Sarah right there at the table and R brings it up again. And my dad, my hero, this very conservative, John Wayne of a man, pipes up in my defense and looks at R and says "I think there is NOTHING more beautiful than a mother breastfeeding her child. The look of contentment on both their faces and there is NOTHING sexual about it." That shut him up so fast and he has never said a word since.

Who knew? My dad the lactivist. Anyway, I just wanted to say you'll be surprised at the people who will back you up on breastfeeding.
