Air travel before 6 week shots?

My aunt slipped into a coma last night (she's been battling leukemia for a few years) and is probably passing away in the next 12-24 hours, and the services will be in Minnesota.  I'm not positive when the services will be, but I feel strongly about going out there to be with my family.  C has his 6 week appointment a week from today.  Would it be better for me to try to reschedule before we leave for MN (and having him on a plane with lots of people) or reschedule for after we get back?  It may be that we don't need to change anything, but I'm just thinking ahead.

Re: Air travel before 6 week shots?

  • I would get the shots before travel but have at least 24hrs from the shots to the actual travel b/c he may have a reaction to the shots. FWIW, we didn't do any shots until 2mo old, I don't even a remember a 6week check up, 1 mo and then 2mo is what we did with both kids.

When traveling, keep him as close to you as possible, wear him if you can, cover him up and he should be fine.

so sorry about your aunt :(

  • I took Aurdrey on her first flight when she was 7 weeks, before she had any vax. She stayed in her carrier on me pretty much the entire trip (except for when we went through security and I had to remove the carrier). I think if baby C is not being passed around at the airport/plane, he should be okay. I wouldn't give him the vax early, but I delay vax anyway, so I might not be your best measurement!

Sorry about your aunt. I'm sure you'll cherish your memories.?

  • I'm sorry to hear about your aunt.

Like pp said, I think M got a series of shots at 2 months, not 6 weeks. Do you have a 6-week appt. set up with the pedi?

  • I would call your pedi and ask /his/her opinion.

I think I would have done the vacines early, but there may be a reason to avoid it.

I traveled with DD#1 at 7 weeks and got the shots early, just to be on the safe side, but I agree with pps that if you carry DS close to you, you'll probably be fine if it's not possible to get the shots done in time.

  • Our pedi said that the two month vax could be done as early as six weeks, but not earlier.  So you may not have a choice about it - you may have to just do them later than six weeks if you're out of town.  Ask them about that.  I'm not sure pedis can give vax earlier than six weeks.

    So sorry about your aunt.

I took DS on his first flight (a short one) at 3 weeks because my grandmother was dying and I hoped for her to meet him before she passed.  I felt it was important enough for me to take the risk and everything turned out fine.

My pedi also said six weeks was the earliest for shots, though I did not ask about taking him on a flight, I just did it.

you should see if it's possible to get them early. we just had 3 vaccines at H's 2 month appt yesterday. the only thing she'd had before that was the 2nd Hep B at her 1 mo visit.

  • I'm sorry about your aunt. We also traveled via car with DS at 3 weeks old due to a family funeral. It was worth it to be there for us.
