Re: DH and i dont agree...

  • DH and I have very different naming styles. He loved the girls name, but for boys names I never thought we would find one we both loved. This is how we got there:

I printed a list of 1000 or so names. I gave the list to H and he crossed off names he hated, leaving maybe's and ones he loved. I then went through that list and crossed off the ones I hated, leaving the maybe's and ones I loved.

We had about 10 names when finished. With those names, we tried it on with our last name, crossing off names that didn't work w/ the last name. That left 5 good names. Then we tried on each name for about a week a piece, until we concluded that Dillon was the winner.

Dillon was not a name I or H LOVED, at the beginning, it was not even on either one of our radars, but now it is the perfect name for our son. It is so much my son it feels like the other 4 names that were left, would never had worked. I think it is rare for both parents to LOVE a name. This is the ultimate test in compromise.

A lot of years and a million tears finally led me to you.
After 7 years trying to concieve, 3 failed IUIs and 2 failed IVFs, my third IVF was a success!
My Christmas baby turned into a turkey bird! Dillon Richard was born at 34 weeks, 5 days on November 28, 2009 after 10 weeks on bedrest for preeclampsia.

  • DH and I both made a list of names we liked and surprisingly we had 4 names in common. So after that we took another month and finally "decided" on a name. I say it like that because we have not told ANYONE (except my fellow bump ladies) and i just feel I can't be 100% sure until I see his face after he is born!

  • We did something very similar to what Krissy did.  We both came up w/ our own lists and we went through each others lists doing what Krissy did - crossed out the ones we hated, and so forth.

We ended up w/ a combined list of about  8 or 9 names and we did the same thing- tried them out w/ our last name and also w/ the middle name I REALLY wanted (my maiden name).  We really liked Colin, but w/ my maiden name, it was a no-go.

Long story short, a name DH had found was Declan.  Never even heard of it before!  But it was one of the few names he REALLY liked, and I sat on it, mulled it over, and after awhile, I came around and liked it - and we decided to use it.

I too agree that the concept of "you both have to LOVE it" is unrealistic.  You have to work together and yes, compromise often plays a role in the process.

    Good luck!

  • Oh, and if you're going to find out the gender, then just wait until you know. It will make the process easier.  DH actually refused to talk names until we knew, and while I was anxious to get started - I totally understood his point. It knocked out 1/2 the problem.

  • We agree on a girls name.  We do not agree on a boys name, at all.

  • Yes and no.  While we have very similar naming styles (traditional/old-fashioned), DH is way more particular/picky than I am.  If you gave him a list of 1,000 names he will literally veto 998 of them.  Boy names, especially, were harder for us to agree on.  Finally we just settled on family names.  We've got a top name for each gender (we're team green), although in my mind I have 2 or 3 girl names up for consideration.

  • My DH won't even discuss names with me until we know what the baby is. So I understand your frustration. Hopefully once you find out what the baby is, something will come to either of you and you'll both love it. Good luck.

  • Yes and no.

We could come up with a list of boys' names we agree on a mile long. Girls though? Eh, not so much.

We have ONE girls' name we're totally, completely set on. Period. If we have more than one girl, we're going to have a lot of arguments over names.

Fortunately, you guys have plenty of time. And your DH might be waiting until you find out the sex to start seriously considering names. Mine decided we're not discussing names again until we know the sex. It annoyed me at the time, but it's prevented a lot of unnecessarily arguments.

  • DH refused to discuss names until he met the baby...as in until baby was born! (Actually, that's not entirely true. We did have 1 conversation about names we could never imagine using. This came about after friends named their new baby and we both hated the name. Anyway, after that conversation we started jokingly referring to LO as one of the names we disliked because we were Team Green and didn't have any better ideas for how to refer to baby. We still use that awfull nn to this day Embarrassed.)

But we didn't talk seriously about names until J. was born. Yet we were still able to name him in about a day and a half.

You still have plenty of time left.

  • We didn't even bother discussing until we knew sex. We still don't know. It will probably come down to me making a list and him giving thumbs up or down.

  • We can't agree on a boys name (again)....we were so lucky that DD was a girl (we were Team Green first time round) because we only had a girls name chosen and had no clue on a boys name at all.

This time we again have a girls name chosen but are still stuck on a boys name, and we're pretty sure it's going to be a boy (the technician who did my 20 week scan was only pretty sure it was a boy Sad)
