?? about EBM in a bottle

If EBM in a bottle is warmed up but DD doesn't drink it, can you leave it out at room temp or does it have to go right back in the fridge?  How long can it sit out?  I don't remember!

Kellymom says it's OK to refrig but it's probably best to be used within a few hours.

  • So let's say my mom warms a bottle to take to story time in case she gets hungry, but she doesn't drink it.  An hour later they come home and she's sleeping.  Should the bottle go back in the fridge?  Or is it no good anymore because it was out for an hour or so?  I know I'm making a mountain out of a mole hill......  :-)

  • I probably do it wrong but...with this LO I take out a bottle from the fridge and I don't warm it up.  I let it stay cool until I need it.  I've been feeding LO right before we leave somewhere anyways so the bottle is mostly just for emergencies.  LO will just drink it cold/cool if he needs it or if I am somewhere near a sink I just run the bottle under warm tap water for a minute.  So far, LO could care less about the temp of the milk. If I haven't used the bottle, like in your scenario, I feel if it is still cold, if so I put it back in the fridge, or if it is a bottle I've had in there for a day or two anyways I just leave it out until the next feeding and use it up.

My first thought for you is that is you are actually warming the bottle up, you should then use it eventually and not put it back in the fridge.  Not sure why, but that is what I think.

  • I'd put it back in the fridge in this instance.  Since she didn't actually "warm" it and it was only out and hour, I'd have no problem reusing it.
  • If I recall (and it's been way too long for me to remember....) the biggest issue is to have them drink it, put it in the fridge half drank, and then give it back to them.  There's bacteria that can get in the bottle and mix with the milk (ewww)
  • I remember them saying not to put it back in the fridge if it was drank from after being warmed.  It has something to do with bacteria.  I always left mine out.  I read 4 hours after it was warmed and drank from.  Good luck!  Biggest thing is to smell it and if it smells bad then don't give it to her :)  Enjoy your last day of maternity leave!  Hang in there!
