Would you consider giving your LO V8 or V8 fusion drinks?
Is there any reason not to give LOs V8? I don't know anyone who has but LO is getting picky on her drinks so I was on the juice aisle looking for options. She will only do vanilla formula or a little bit of water in a sippy cup. Watered down juices are emptied out in record times though. I've been leaving a sippy of water around all day for her to drink from but it's been 3 weeks now of no juice/only water and formula and no improvement in drinking more water.
Re: If you are holding out on juice...
I have never thought about the V8 juices.. i am trying to hold out on Juice. my Pedi says only milk and water.. but my ILS wont stop giving her juice... They are living with me ::sigh:: So its a never ending battle.
Why not just kick juice out of the house completely?
They buy things and bring it into the house.. they are living with me.. using the fridge and all.
Sounds like it's time to have your DH put his foot down if they're not listening to you about it. They need to respect your rules, it's not their kid.
I've never considered V8 & V8 splash because they always seem really high in sodium and sugar. How about the fresher varieties of veggie + fruit juice found in the produce sections? We sometimes give DS the plain carrot juice or will mix it with a little pear juice and water. Making our own combos is kind of fun too and I control what is in it.
Why are you holding out on juice? Does your child have a dietary issue? DS drinks about 2 sippys of water and juice (about 25% juice maybe) a day along with a sippy of milk and a bottle of milk at night. He has water available to him all day long and will occasionally take a few sips. Our pedi says that as long as he's staying hydrated that the watered down juice is better than no water at all and it's not worth risking dehydration to cut out all juice.
Tell them if they keep buying juice and giving it to your kid they are going to be banned to an ice chest
Haha. Yeah. Ill keep that in mind!
We are holding out on it because it has no nutritional value and drinking a lot of juice is the leading cause of malnutrition and obesity in young children. DS is happy with milk and water, so I figure why bother. He'll have time for juice and sodas later in life, he doesn't need them now.
Yeah, this whole situation has caused a lot of problems.. but they dont listen, and its a really tough situation for me and my DH. Its his parents.. he can tell them what to do.. but it doesnt do anything.. in one ear and out the other. I pray for the day when i have my house back.
Well I'll pray for that too then, b/c that's some BS. I'd be really angry, too.
Aww! Thanks! You dont even know the HALF of it.. but them underminding me when it comes to my daughter of course tops the list!
Yeah, I don't mean to hijack this thread or anything, but while I don't have IL issues, I understand, as we've had people stay with us for extended periods of time too and even that alone is grating.... but to have people going against your wishes on things like that... Ugh.
(My BIL was trying to sneak DS all kinds of sugar.. and soda! when he was 7 months old at my niece's birthday party while my DH was out of town. When I left that party I was all shades of purple. Needless to say they have not babysat since then.)
Where did you hear that juice "has no nutritional value"? Even Sunny D has vitamins (although I wold NEVER feed that sugary shizit to my child) in it. The organic pear juice that is the primary juice that my child drinks has vitamin C, Iron, Potassium, and is just juice, no added sugars, chemicals, etc. The carrot, apple, and passion fruit juice he likes is again free of added crap but also contains natural fiber, vitamin C, and protein, among other vitamins. The pure carrot juice I gave him this morning has fiber, vitamins A & C, protein, calcium, and iron. The orange juice we have in the house is just orange juice and full of vitamin C and protein, among other vitamins.
Kool Aid, Crystal Light, and a host of other juices on the market are crap and horrible for everyone, kids and adults alike, but if you read the labels and make smart choices you can find plenty of juices that have pretty hefty nutritional value. Teach your children portion size and making good choices and you'll decrease the likelihood of them dealing with obesity. Feed your child a balanced diet; teach them to eat a variety of foods and they probably won't be malnourished.
ds has never had juice and i don't plan on introducing it to him any time soon, watered down or not. i just don't feel its necessary to his diet since he eats real fruit on a daily basis.
he really only drinks milk for the most part but we do offer him water on occasion and he will drink it just fine, i just prefer him to drink milk since water makes him pee like a race horse lol.
I'm not holding out on juice, but DS had V8 fusion at my parent's house once and got a bad diaper rash from it because it was more acidic than what he was used to.
Normally he gets a sippy cup of watered down apple juice in the morning with his breakfast, and drinks milk the rest of the day. I'd rather teach him moderation than ban juice entirely.
DD primarily drinks milk and water. She will only drink ice water though. She gets 1 sippy per day that is about half water and half juice..either v8 fusion light (50% less sugar) or odwalla super food juice. Other than those two, I don't give her juice.
I stopped the juice for several reasons.
1) Diaper rashes showed up almost 100% of the time. I stopped the juice and no diaper rashes since. It didn't seem to matter how watered down the juice is.
2) Upset tummies - Atleast I think that is why she's fussing since she grabs her tummy while crying. Not surprising to me if this is an issue for her since even as an adult I water down my juices to 50% water for the same reasons...
3) If given a choice of juice and water. LO drinks juice every time and won't touch the water. I probably wouldn't mind this if she would drink some water consistently...but she won't touch the water cups...It's almost like she's figured out if she can see through the cup easily then it's water and she doesn't want it.
4) My nephews all started out on fruit juices and now throw fits until they get fruit punch/capri sun type drinks. I'm trying to avoid that battle since she will see her cousins fairly often. On the other hand they also drank a lot more water than LO does so I guess it even out in SILs book.
Maybe I will just offer more formula for now. I saw that the V8 did have quite a bit of sodium but then there was the lower sodium version so i was considering it. I'm not going to push it at the moment but I guess I'll talk to the pedi next time we see him...
Why would you encourage a child who likes milk and water to drink juice instead? My kid eats tons of fruit, juice has no added benefit for her and would just give her a sweet tooth and be lots of added sugar she doesn't need. If you don't want to give it that's fine, but it's not beneficial if your kid eats fruit and veggies otherwise. You say to teach your child to make good choices...the best choice is water and feeding fruit and veggies. Nothing wrong with trying to start them out right. Sorry, this is a pet peeve of mine, I feed my kid healthy and the whole world wants to give me a huge guilt trip about it. Feel free to feed your kid whatever you like, but don't lecture me on why it's ok to feed junk every once in awhile, especially when childhood obesity is a HUGE issue in our country.
Exactly! I get so much crap from people (mostly my IL's) for feeding DS healthy food. But then everyone is so suprised that he loves such heathly foods. It will always be "water when your thirsty, milk with your meals" in our house.
I wasn't holding off on juice because I am of the same opinion as the PP that if you give the RIGHT juices there is nothing wrong with it. The apple juice we were giving my son had no added sugars, it was straight up pressed apple juice. IMO that's not junk.
HOWEVER, another bumpie pointed out that she didn't want her kiddos getting used to drinking "water alternatives" setting them up for soda or other crap juices in the future and I thought that was a really good point. So now we don't offer juice.
ETA: Sorry. To answer the OP, no. I would not offer v8 or v8 Splash. There are lots of really healthy all natural juices that don't have added sugar, just check your produce section.
