Have everything I need? Not sure! (long)

Hello bumpies =) I don't usually post in this section, but it seemed best suited to my question.

My situation (basically) is that as of late we've become very strapped for cash. Not only have I been put on bed rest right after becoming unemployed, but SO just got knocked down to a measly 13hrs a WEEK! -outraged- for an indefinite period of time.

So what we're doing is, trying to get the bare essentials for LO and worrying about the extras later, as we need to take what we had saved and pay bills. I'm just trying to see if I've forgotten anything.

Here's what we have so far:
-Graco Pack 'N Play Playard with Bassinet, Kensly
-Graco Snugride 35 Infant Car Seat, Clairmont
-Gerber 12-Pack Prefold Birdseye 3-Ply Cloth Diapers - White (We'll be trying a few different kinds of diapers, and ordering more of the ones we like, but these are the first we've gotten. I believe we'll be getting about 20-30 more, varying kinds, and use those we don't care for, for spit up cloths, clean up, etc.)
-Kushies Washable Diaper Liners - 10 Pack - White (Same for liners, trying washable and disposable. The disposables come in 100-count rolls, so we're getting those next)
-Evenflo Classic Glass Bottle 4 oz, 6-Pack (I'll be mainly breastfeeding, so I'm not too worried about having a ton of bottles. It's pretty much just for when SO wants to feed LO)
-Evenflo Classic Silicone Nipple, 4 Pack, Slow Flow

We'll be purchasing diaper covers and the above mentioned varying kinds of diapers/liners next, as well as storage bags for breast milk. Mattress cover, sheets, and blankets, and whatever clothes we don't already have by the time he's born, as well as bathing tub at some point.

Am I missing anything essential? I'm making my own wipes, and detergent, and getting powder and whatnot at the store. But as far as needing to order anything, I can't think of anything else that's a necessity.

This is my first child, so any input is certainly welcome! Thanks!

  • First aid equipment such as nail clippers/ file, A&D ointment, infant tylenol, saline solution and a snot sucker.

Breast pump since you said that you were going to have your SO feed DS. And breastpads (I used them everyday!), along with nipple cream.

Baby bath essentials: soap, towels, washcloths
  • Loading the player...
  • I would check craigslist for a swing. With #2 she would only sleep in her swing for the first 4 mths. It was a lifesaver. (she had acid reflux really bad)
  • Check consignment stores and sales for clothes and gear.  Make sure breastfeeding will work for you before sinking money into an expensive pump. You can usually rent a breast pump from the hospital if you aren't sure.

Oh! Yes, first aid! See I knew I was forgetting something.

I'm going to try the hand pump they provide at the hospital when they have a breast feeding specialist show me what I need to do. Hopefully it goes smoothly, but just in case there are any issues (we were all allergic to my mother's milk), I want to make sure before I get a nice pump. I didn't even think of breast pads or nipple cream!

We're trying to stay away from a swing if possible. Hopefully we'll be able to, but I'll definitely find one on amazon that we we could get shipped 2 day if he needs it, thanks!

That's what I planning to do. I believe our hospital gives you a hand pump, but I know for sure they let you use one to teach you how. Thanks! =]

  • Oh, one other thing you may want to ask about on the Cloth Diaper board is whether you can CD from day one.  I feel like several of my friends found that CD didn't work well until the baby was bigger, but I may be mistaken
  • I've only heard bad things about the Gerber prefolds. You can cloth diaper with prefolds from day one, no problem - but they're affordable no matter where you get them; might as well get good ones. Try Green Mountain Diapers.

Really? I've heard lots of good things from friends online and IRL. Do you recall any of the bad aspects you heard? I intend on using covers and inserts for any CDs I use, so absorbency isn't a huge issue for me. I hadn't heard much otherwise, though. I'll definitely check out Green Mountain ones!

This!  They are not too expensive, and they are way more absorbent.  Green Mountain Diapers also sells some reasonably priced covers, and you don't need that many.  That site is great- there's a whole section about diapering on different budgets and what you will need, etc.

You don't NEED all that much for a baby.  You don't need special towels or washcloths, you don't need a swing...  I think you're on the right track, and you can figure the rest out once the baby gets here.

The cloth diapering board is full of info and the ladies are super nice. I would ask there or search a few pages back. The question comes up from time to time.
