Breach baby at 36 weeks - window to do manual manipulation - 3 days

Everything has been moving along smoothly... almost too good to be true, I'd say... no sickness, no discomfort, no GD or blood pressure issues... So at 36 weeks finding out that the baby is in breach position, I have been faced with a decision to either let baby go full term and see if she flips herself around (and face c-section if she doesn't), or let them do an external cephalic version (manual manipulation of the baby to push her into the proper position). I'm now scared to death. From day 1, I have wanted to avoid having a c-section. I was hoping to have natural birth with no drugs, and I've only ever been in the hospital once and that was for "monitoring" after a car accident (and I was fine). Has anyone had the ECV done? Was it successful? I'm really struggling with this decision as I am worried the ECV puts unnecessary stress on my baby - who may end up deciding she wants to turn around on her own! Any suggestions or experiences you can offer are greatly appreciated!

Re: Breach baby at 36 weeks - window to do manual manipulation - 3 days

  • I would let them try the manual manipulation. cause there really isn't too much room in there for the baby to turn around (unless you have a long torso) By lo has been head down for 6 weeks and I dont think that he will turn since I have such a short torso!

    Good luck.

  • A friend of mine wanted to try acupuncture to help turn her baby, but she was 38ish weeks & I think I remember her saying something about acupuncture being optimal for that around 36wks.  Check into that if you're interested...
  • I know two girls who have done manual manipulation. One of my girlfriend's procedure made her go into labor, and she had to have a C-Section anyway. She said that the manial manipulation really hurt. My other friend had it done and the baby came the next day and had bruises. She said that it was not the best feeling in the world, but she would have had a C-Section.

  • My boys all flipped around 36/37 weeks on their own. =) There is hope but I would be willing to try having the baby flipped if you want to avoid C/Section. I hear that is is not comfortable but I guess it is all up to you. Big Smile
  • I flipped two breech babies using the following techniques.

1st son - Breech at 35/36 - flipped at 37 prior to ECV

    Handstands in the pool

    Inversions

    Cold/Hot Packs

    3rd Child - Breech at 36 Flipped at 38 W 3 Days

Webster, Acupuncture, Moxibustin, Inversions, Cold/Hot Packs

    Hope this helps!

  • GO SEE A CHIROPRACTOR IMMEDIATELY!!  If they are skilled with pregnancy, newborns or infants they will be able to help with 1-2 adjustments.  Whne your spin is in alignment, the baby has more room to move naturally, it just makes sense.  Also, defienetely check out accupuncture, as well as prenatal yoga that can give you a 10% hip opening and possibly even some reiki or reflexology,

  • What a difficult decision. I don't know anything about ECV or know anyone who has had it done. All I've done is a quick google search...it looks painful! And scary! All I can offer is my opinion...not sure if that is what you're looking for. I have a MW and managed drug-free labor with no c-section and that to me was a huge success. That was really all I wanted. That being said, I don't think I could do the ECV. I would do everything possible to get that baby to turn on its own, using any and every suggestion given to me. If in the end, it doesn't turn, I would take a c-section over the ECV. I just watched a You Tube video and although the patient looks completely comfortable...I feel like I'm going to throw up. Maybe its not so bad. Maybe a fellow Bumpie will reply and say it was a piece of cake. I'm going strictly on a video and what I read on Web MD :)

    Good luck with your decision.

I was going to suggest this as well. I'm actually seeing a chiro for a twisted/rotated pelvis. One of the effects of this is malpositioning (breech) and my chiro is doing what he can to keep that from happening. Worth a shot.

  • Go for the version if you are really trying to avoid a c-section. It is uncomfortable for you, but a fairly quick procedure. They won't continue to try if the baby isn't turning easily. After babies get to be a certain size, or if they are totally engaged in the pelvis, the likelihood of them flipping is slim, so go for it! Good luck, and know that if you indeed have to have a c-section after-all, at least you did what you could to avoid it, and you still get to have a healthy baby! Good luck!!
  • In my birthing classes the instructor made a point of saying that it can be pretty painful and there's no guarantee the baby won't flip back to breech.

  • I usually just lurk over here, but I had the same questions you have late last week, and figured it might help to share some of the info I wish someone had told me. I had a successful ECV this morning (first time mom, 37 weeks, 5 days). Mine was done in the hospital in an LDR room, and I was given terbutaline to relax my uterus and morphine to relax me (I think my hospital usually gives demerol, but I was given morphine due to some previous adverse drug reactions). I don't know how normal this is - I've read that some hospitals don't give mom anything to relax, and some do epidurals.

During the procedure, my OB and a second OB greased up my belly with olive oil and did their thing. I'm not going to lie, it hurt (enough for me to make noise and not just breathe through it), but it hurt for maybe 1-2 minutes, and she flipped, and that was it. Honestly, I imagine pre-epidural labor will be more painful, and recovery from a c/s would be WAY more painful.

Afterward, I was kept in the hospital on monitors for about four hours, mainly because baby girl was moving around so much, they kept losing her heart rate on the monitors. As for the meds, I had the shakes/kept shivering on and off for about an hour after getting medicated, and then the morphine made me pretty light headed and nauseated all morning, until I finally got sick on our way home from the hospital (felt way better after that).

DH and I were really unsure of whether to give the ECV a try, especially since online you can only really find clinical information, horror stories or people saying "my doctor doesn't even offer that procedure, they think it's unsafe." In the end, I had reconciled myself with the possibility of a c/s (either emergency or scheduled) if it didn't work, but wanted to at least have a chance of a vaginal birth.

For me, it came down to trusting my doctor to be conservative and not try to push harder than my body and the baby could handle. Yes, she could flip back, and we'll cross that bridge if that happens (would probably try the version again, followed by an induction), but at least we tried everything we could. I know it helped me to write down all the questions (even the dumb ones) I had about the procedure, the various outcomes, and the doctor's experience with the procedure and go through them with my doctor's nurse.

Good luck making your decision, and lots of head-down dust for you!

  • My DD#2 was breech at 32 weeks and still at 34 weeks. I started freaking out at the end of 34 weeks. If she was still breech at 36 weeks I was going for a ECV at 37ish weeks.

I found a chiropractor that did the Webster technique to help align my sacrum (I think that's what it is called). I did 3 (that's it) adjustments 35 weeks, 35w2d, and 35w5d. I started acupuncture (burning the moxa sticks at your baby toes) at 35w1d. I did that again at home at 35w3d and 35w5d. I did a lot of focused thoughts of telling the baby to turn. I did the hands/knees position a handful of times but it is really uncomfortable for me.

At 36 weeks she was NOT breech....so hopefully she is still head down at my appointment tomorrow. GL to yoU!!

I would definitely try everything else before you do the version.
