Help....fussiness

I am a first time mom, and I am not sure if this is normal, but my DS eats, sleeps, or cries. We have very little calm awake time. He gets fussy, and we do everything to calm him until he sleeps, but is it normal for him to be fussy like that? He doesn't cry for hours,  but definitely can go along time with nothing soothing him....

Help, advice, your own similar story would help me :)

Re: Help....fussiness

  • My gal does that sometimes now, too.  Usually I assume that she wants a burp, but if i don't get one within 15 minutes of back patting/rubbing I walk around the house with her (in an upright position) and that usually calms her down enough to look around.  Unfortunately if I try to sit down or stop walking, she'll get fussy again ha ha but exercise is good.

  • I have a very fussy lil lady on my hands too. I've learned that the hardest thing about taking care of a newborn is having NO idea what is wrong with them. I have eliminated quite a few things from my diet, thinking that may be causing her to be gassy. But, I've come to the conclusion that she is just naturally gassy. I'm going to try this homeopathic gripe water called Colic Calm today/tonight. Here's hoping it will work! ;)

  • We've been going through this with our DD as well... she is inconsolable when she starts crying - it can take an hour to get her to calm down and go back to sleep.  I feel like we go through a cycle of crying, feed her to stop her crying, sleep for about half an hour, then screaming again and repeat.  The pediatrician told us we needed to limit her feedings to every 2.5 - 3 hours and only go about 15 min per side then burp her and put her down in her car seat or swing or something upright to sleep.  That helped but she was still fussy and spitting up.

Yesterday at her 2 week visit, the pediatrician prescribed Zantac for her since she thinks its reflux that's giving her issues.  Last night was the best night we've had so far - she actually slept 2 4-hour stretches and only had one crying incident around midnight.  She's been great today throughout the day and actually had some awake time where she was just looking around and content.  I'm hoping this does the trick.

  • I have an eater, sleeper, or pooper/spitter here.  DD is only this past week starting to have any alert time.

  • Yes, I suffer with this too. I can't leave her with DH because he thinks she just needs to figure it out/CIO because he 'can't help her gas go away, she has to work it out on her own' and sets her down to cry so he can do what HE wants. I can't stand to know that YES, you CAN help by patting her back, singing/swaddling/pacifier/gently jiggling, but that's too much to expect from him. I can do it (have done it) for hours straight whereas he gets sick of it after 15 min.

Anyway... A front pack carrier can help her sit upright (Try to keep her in one on me after she's eaten to help burps come out) and drumming on her butt seem to help us most. Besides continual nursing from 5pm-8pm.

  • I recommended the book The Happiest Baby on the Block. It has a lot of great solutions.
