Birthcare in Alexandria?

Anyone have experience at BirthCare in Alexandria? I would really like a homebirth, but I have Kaiser and they only cover at the birthing center. I'm leaning towards this instead of a hospital birth (I live in Alexandria) and I was wondering about other experiences there. I'm almost 7 weeks and haven't had my first appointment yet, so I was wondering if people started out with Kaiser and then switched, or started at BirthCare from the beginning. Any insight is helpful.

    Congrats on expecting! I'd definitely call BirthCare and start doing prenatals there since they only have a limited number of delivery spaces. Good luck!

    Also, BirthCare does homebirths as well as birth center births. I think a friend of mine who has Kaiser was able to finagle a homebirth through BirthCare. Definitely ask about that.

    Congrats on your pregnancy! If BirthCare is full, definitely consider contacting the Birth by Design midwives. They are so caring and excellent at what they do. They do homebirths but are opening a Birth Center this June 1, which it sounds like is before your due date. It would be a little drive for you - I think it's in Chantilly, (45 minutes away w/o traffic) but of course WORTH IT to get the birth you want!

    I've got bad news for you. Birth Care and Kaiser ended their agreement in early 2010. Kaiser now has NO out-of-hospital options. I wrestled with them about this, asked lots of questions, filed a complaint with Kaiser, talked to Birth Care about why, etc. Honestly, I shed many tears that because of IF we missed out on this option since a home or center Bradley birth had been my vision of birthing for my whole adult life. Birth Care as an option was a reason I had stuck with Kaiser, so it was just salt in the wound to find out it was no longer covered. We seriously considered paying OOP to go through Birth Care (about $4k) but we just couldn't hack paying that. 

    I am happy to talk to you about how we approached our goal of a low-intervention hospital birth with Kaiser if you'd like (#1 strategy--hire a doula). My email is pixieprincss at yahoo if you have questions.

    ooh wow. Thanks everyone for your suggestions! I'm sorry to hear about Kaiser and BirthCare. Maybe that's why I haven't heard back from them (BirthCare). I've emailed/called and mentioned Kaiser, but I have yet to hear back -- this may be why.
