Brushing Baby Teeth

When are you supposed to start oral hygiene and what is recommended or what do you do?

Re: Brushing Baby Teeth

  • DS has 7 teeth.  I bought a finger brush but still have yet to use it.

  • I don't recommend the finger brush...babies bite when they get teeth! I got one for my first and he bit me twice, so I got a soft toddler brush after that. (I thought I could just tell him no, but that didn't work because the urge to bite when something is in the mouth is too great.

Victor has 1 1/2 teeth right now and I plan on wiping them with a wet cloth. He loves to chew on one anyway while he's teething, so it's a great way to wipe away any food.

  • As soon as his teeth popped out, we used the finger brush, but I was admittedly very lazy about it and not a fan of getting my finger bitten off.

Now that he has a full mouth, we have a soft toddler brush and a fruit flavored toothpaste gel that he likes.  Still a struggle, but he's getting better about it.  We brush every night before bed (unless he falls asleep during story time.)

  • DS went to the dentist for the first time around 10 months.  We brush his teeth 1- 2x per day with an infant toothbrush (not a finger one) and use a fluoride-free infant toothpaste (Weleda).  I took my older DD to the dentist for the first time at 3yrs old and baby brother came along (at 4mos)--the dentist said she likes to see them as soon as they have teeth so I made him an appt along with DD in 6 mo.  DS is better at the dentist than my 3 yr old and happily cooperates for teeth brushing too.
  • I was using a finger brush from 3 months on.

Then about 6 months, I gave her the first baby toothbrush to gnaw on for teething.  She loved the feel of the bristles on her gums.  I never let her use it unsupervised, but she would go to town on it.

So when she was about 9 months old, I started in on actually brushing her teeth with it.  By 12 months, she was attemptign to "brush" too.

We started brushing as soon as teeth popped out.  We used the finger brush (ouch!) then moved to a toddler banana shaped toothbrush.  Matt brushes his own teeth now.  According to my dentist at this point it is more important to make sure they make it a habit.

DH and I both have electric toothbrushes and after Matt walked around the house with his finger in his mouth going "brummmm" I bought one for him.  The dentist was worried that Matt could do damage on his gums so we only let Matt use it for a minute or two.

  • I started with a wet toddler towel during bath time when they where 3mths old and from 9mths a toddler's soft bristle tooth brush will do the magic. by the time they are one they want to try out brushing the teeth themselves.
