I'm reading Superbaby by Dr. Jenn Bermann and am currently on the speech development chapter. She mentions studies that say you should speak an average of 30,000 words per day to your LO. They equate this with reading Cat in the Hat 18 times. In order to get this much oral diarrhea into one day, I would have to narrate every single thing that occurs between 8am-8pm. This includes "my fingers are moving over a keyboard right now to make words"; "in a few minutes, I will have to get up from this chair to urinate".
Are they kidding? Or am I unknowingly raising a mute? Does anyone here think they get 30G's worth of words into their day?
Re: Does anyone speak 30,000 words a day to their LO?!
Umm.no. But I can tell you that DS is a rambler. He never is quite and is always "saying" something. It surprises me for being a boy.
Born 7lb, 15oz, 21-1/4, 2 mo - 12lbs, 14oz. 25", 3mo - 14lb, 4oz 26in , 4 mo - 16lb, 1oz, 26 3/4 in, 5 mo 18 lb, 4oz 27-3/4 in, 6 mo 28 3/4 in 19lb, 14oz
Okay, I can see this being applicable to a toddler who is old enough to bother his/her sister. An infant though?
What is the purpose of the book?
We talk to the girls as much as possible, but it's not stream-of-conciousness at all.
Unable to even.

You don't understand the appeal of Benedict Cumberbatch / think he's fug / don't know who he is? WATCH SHERLOCK. Until you do, your negative opinion of him will not be taken seriously.
Francesca Pearl is here! Josephine Hope is almost 3!
No, I get 29,995 words in a day. JK.
I honestly have no idea. I do talk to him quite a bit, but that more has to do with boredom and lack of other interaction than trying to develop his speech. Momma of the year, right here.
Considering I read all day long to Olivia, I think I am saying at least that many words. I also talk to the wall if I have to so I do narrate everything I am doing...
This! But I am no where near that number.
Same here!

The book is to help facilitate an environment that allows the baby to grow intellectually and emotionally in their 1st 3 years. She writes a lot of absurd stuff that makes me feel like a sh!tty parent, I should just stop reading it. Although I have to admit, some of it is helpful. There is a chapter that I found useful on introducing a second language. I also use the illustrations for baby massage.

I read all day too, including the posts I read on TB out loud. I do this because I don't know what else to say besides the phrases Snoopy mentioned. I quit reading age appropriate books and moved on to magazine articles and short stories. This way we're both entertained, I just wish the pictures were bigger for LO.
I wish Olivia was interested in the latest celebrity gossip or the happenings on TB... Abigail doesn't care what I'm saying as long as I'm talking.
Maybe to my toddler. It mostly consists of "Please don't ______," LOL!
Seriously though, don't worry about it. DS was "behind" verbally for most of his first year, then suddenly had a major verbal breakthrough and was speaking in 9-10 word sentences at 21 months. Just act normal, talk to your kid, and everything will be just fine.
I wish, they vilify television. Poor TV, everyone hates him so much. I think that overhearing other people speaking around him would be considered part of those 30K
I would probably say I come close, but that also depends on what they consider talking to him. I wear him a lot of the day, so he hears me and listens to me if I'm talking to DH or a clerk in the store or a friend or whatever. I may not be actively talking to him, but he's kind of in the conversation. He'll even butt in sometimes. I also make up rhymes and songs for silly things we do all day. Some of those songs though are made up of one or two words, so does repeating the same word over and over count?
My little guy is a serious social bug though. He loves when we talk to him, so that's what we do. I don't necessarily talk to him in order to try to turn him into a super baby. If anything, I'd almost prefer he not be some insanely smart kid. I want him to enjoy a fairly normal childhood, free of the stresses and pressures to become "better" than he is.
