3rd Trimester

Induction methods...

I am being induced in two weeks and I talked to my midwife about their preferred induction technique and she said they will not use cervadil on me but go straight to pitocin, this was the case when I was induced with DD1 as well, however I keep seeing posts about cervadil first, is this only for first time Mom's or those whose cervix's aren't favorable?

Re: Induction methods...

  • My OB went straight to pictocin after breaking my waters and seeing no contractions after 2 hours of breaking my waters. I was 5 cm dilated at the time so not sure if thats why she went straight to pictocin but she never mentioned cervadil as an option.

  • I did have cervadil with DS1.  I was only dilated to a 1 and basically not effaced or anything.  I think it just helps to ripen the cervix, which I'm guessing could help your labor to progress more quickly once they do the pitocin.  Maybe your midwife just wants to use as few medical aids as possible?  I would ask about it, because I'm sure they could do cervadil if you wanted it.  Good luck!

  • cervadil is used to thin the cervix and not needed if you are effaced.

  • I was not dilated at all and went straight to pitocin during my induction.

  • With DS my doc told me we would go right to pitocin, since I was 3 cm and 75% effaced.

  • Interesting, I am already dilating and effaced so perhaps that is the reasoning. It's okay with me since with DD I only had a six hour labor with pitocin only and an amniotomy.

  • why are you being induced?  can u use reflexology and accupuncture to bring about spontaneous labor?
