Pregnant after a Loss

Pregnancy-Induced Carpel Tunnel

Anybody else get this?  My hand is numb every morning and I can't even make a fist or grasp anything for like an hour or so when I first get up.  I called my friend who is an occupational therapist and she said she had it when she was pregnant.  I bought a hand/wrist splint for now and if it doesn't get better in a few days she told me to call the doc.  Just curious if anyone else has experienced this????

Re: Pregnancy-Induced Carpel Tunnel

  • Yeah, I do. But it only started a few weeks ago. I asked Voutsos about it at 2 separate appointments, he said it wasn't a big deal. He said that hand and face swelling aren't as common as feet/ankle swelling, but that unless it got really bad, it was just part of pregnancy. I wake up every morning and my hands feel so pudgy and swollen and the joints hurt to make a fist, just like you described.  I asked Dr. Schoenberger about it at my appt yesterday and he had the same attitude as Voutsos. Basically, don't worry about it. I guess, since my blood pressure has been fine and there's been no proteins in my urine etc, they aren't concerned. Sorry, not sure if that helps at all, but see what they say when you talk to them.

  • I was diagnosed with this.  I had a lot of swelling in my hands.  I couldn't make a fist and the tips of my fingers were numb for most of the day.  I had an appointment to meet with my doc to get a splint but ended up going into labor before the appointment.  It continued for about a week after giving birth but was completely gone then when the swelling started to decrease.  You should be fine once baby comes!
  • Hi Katie,

Thanks for the info.  I'm just glad it's not a serious condition, you know?  I can totally live with this, but it's just a pain.  My fingers get numb during the day.  I'll be glad when it goes away!

Thanks.  I guess it's more common than I thought!

  • I had this.  I see a chiropractor, who found big problems.  He started treating it and within 2 weeks I had no pain.  He was very wary of me wearning my brace, because people tend to wear them every moment they are awake.  It is important the the joint get some exercise and movement.  Try not to keep it completely immobile and it might be a good idea to talk to your doc.
  • I haven't had it so far, but I had it bad w/ DD. It was on and off from about 20 weeks, and got really bad towards the end. The good thing is that it completely goes away after you deliver. It took about a month, then it was gone.
