Really? (Vent)

My mom asked me to get on Skype to say 'hi' to my grandmother. My grandmother proceeded to ask my mom when my baby is due and my mom couldn't answer.

Now, I've *mostly* come to terms with the fact that I am an after-thought, but this is a bit much. How do you not know when your own (first!) grandbaby is due? Sigh. I was hoping she'd at least blurt out something like, "Summer!" but no such luck.

This is a good reminder that we cannot expect more from people than they are capable of giving. Today I confided in my dad that he was the only person who was making me feel special during my pregnancy (aside from DH, obvi) and all he could do was stutter out a weak response in my mom's defense about all the stress she's under. She IS stressed but one might think a new baby would be a welcome distraction. Or not.  Fact is, the stress on her plate is a stress we're all sharing and it is a fight sometimes for any of us to feel healthy and OK enough to try to enjoy our day and be productive so it isn't like I'm oblivious to how she feels.

Complaining over-thanks for reading.  Y'all are gems. :)

  • If it makes you feel any better this will be my parents first grandbaby and they keep forgetting the date of our anatomy scan (Its thursday not tuesday, mom!  I've told her like 10 times).  I even wrote her an email saying  "3 days" earlier today and she wrote back..."until what?"

    ....oh dear.

I'm pretty sure she cannot tell you what the due date is, but she knows its late July because my due date is near my brother's birthday.  DH's family is even worse at remembering the details.  But this is their 5th grandchild and my hubby is one of six children.

But it doesn't really bother me.   My LO is the center of MY world, not theirs.  I mean, sure it will be a pretty big part of their world, but I don't expect them to remember each and every detail.  I wouldn't stress over it.  Just know that they love you and are just as excited about the baby as you are.  Its just a different kind of excitement than what you are going through.

  • I'm so sorry!  If it makes you feel better, I know when you are due ;-) maybe because we have the same due date!

Seriously though - that is so lame.  My mom had a hard time getting excited about her first grandchild, even though she is generally an awesome mom/person.  It frustrated me a lot, but I realized it wasn't about me... I'm not really sure what it was about, to be honest.  Maybe she was worried about the reality of getting older, life changing, etc.  Luckily, she is over-the-moon this time around.  Now, I just have my SIL to get annoyed with ;)

    Hugs to you, friend!

  • I'm sorry that's happening...people can be so disappointing.

I have the exact opposite thing happening. My mother is sooo excited about our pregnancy that this has somehow become her baby. She told my grandparents before I could, she was angry when I asked her to remove her post about being a grandmother on FB until I had at least told my work, and everytime I try to talk about my pregnancy, she jumps in and finishes whatever I'm saying. Don't get me wrong, I'm grateful for her support, but it can be difficult/annoying sometimes.

  • My mom keeps forgetting when my due date is too, I had to write it on her calendar! This is my first, but my sister already has 3 girls.

At least you can make it a pact that you won't treat your LO that way when he/she is older!
