How much advanced notice for a birthday party?

DS's birthday is March 11 so I'm looking at booking his party for the 12th or 13th.  I was really busy with finals so now I'm not sure if that would be enough notice for parents of the kids in his class.  His birthday is actually a half day that starts the beginning of spring break.  Would that weekend be better or should I wait until the weekend ending spring break?

  • I would go for the weekend ending spring break just to give the parents more time to plan.

  • If you're going to do it around his bday, you need to send invites out now.  If you can't send them out now, then push it back a week and send them in a few days.  I have gotten invites just days or a week before a party, but there has been low turnout for those parties.  If you only want a few kids there, then last minute invites work well.  But, you risk your DC's good friends not being able to make it.

Cost wise it would be great if it was a small party but he's in Kindergarten now and wants to invite his whole class.  I think he would enjoy it more with more kids.  I always like to do it closer to his birthday but I just don't know if it's too much to try to squeeze in right now.  I would have to call and book today and then get the invitations to school tomorrow.  I'm leaning towards pushing it back a week.  As long as we do something fun with him on his birthday weekend it's not a big deal to have it a week after his birthday is it?

  • I have gotten invites 2 weeks before the party/  For me, that is cutting it close as we tend to get super busy on weekends but I think for a lot of people, that is fine.  I typically send invites out 3 weeks before the party with an RSVP date a week before.  I would not plan a party for the weekend that leads into a school vacation week as a lot of people might be traveling.

I think 3 weeks is good.
