Postpartum Depression

Night time anxiety

Does anyone's symptoms seem to worsen during the evenings and night time? I seem to find that in the morning I can feel fine, have some confidence in myself. But as soon as it hits around evening time and night time my anxiety seems to increase. My son seems to be really sensitive at this point. He is only 2 1/2 weeks old. But really sensitive to change in movements. He'll fall asleep during or after he's done nursing and will stay asleep if i hold him, but as soon as I move him to lay down he wakes up. My husband has been really great and will take him when I need it, but I still feel a lot of anxiety. That in itself can be overwhelming. How do you cope with anxiety? What are some things you do to help you calm down and not go onto panic mode?

Re: Night time anxiety

  • I have the exact same thing.  At least I did.  I'm on medication now (LO is 4 1/2 weeks), but at the 2 week mark, I had the same exact feeling.  At like 4 or 5 I'd start panicing- big time.  Like, I'd get a sick feeling in my stomach.  Is LO a bad night time sleeper?  Mine is, so I think that added to the anxiety- I knew I was in for a rough night.  It's gotten better over the last couple weeks- not sure if it's because she's sleeping a bit better or the meds or because I'm a little more used to her routine, but it is better.  Have you spoken to your doc about it?

  • Yes, he's been waking every hour to feed. He seems to be really sensitive to change and wakes easily if moved. I do think that fatigue has some to do with it. I have made an appointment to talk with a therapist. I think that will help. Last night he actually gave me a few hours sleep so hears to hoping tonight goes better as well. Thanks for sharing, it helps to know other moms have gone through this as well.

  • Best of luck to you.  I go to a new mom's group once a week and just expressing myself helps a bunch.  Out of curiousity, are you swaddling your LO?  Mine is pretty sensitive to change as well and does much better when swaddled.  Everyone and their mom tells you it gets better, and it does- I swear.  You are most definitely not alone.
  • Thanks so much! I appreciate it!

Yes, we started swaddling him again the last two nights. At first it didn't seem to make a difference so we stopped. Then the last two nights we decided to try it again and it has helped. Hopefully tonight will be a better night as well. Thanks again!
