Potty Training

Anyone PTing a toddler with a newborn?

Don't ask me how I got in this position.  When I was hugely pregnant, waiting until I was home on maternity leave to PT sounded wise, now I want to kick my own a$$!!

I started PTing DD last summer (no formal method) and she was doing great, but my DCP didnt want her in underwear unless she was 100% trained and I didn't want to use pullups.  I made one excuse after another to put it off (vacation, holidays, baby coming) and here we are, 2 months away from turning 3 and still in diapers.

I have read the 3 day method, but I am afraid I won't be able to focus with a newborn.  Any tips?

  • I did.

are you sure she is ready?

It wasn't easy- however my DD was VERY ready and it took about a week of being VERY vigilant

  • I think she is ready.  When I put in the effort, she will stay dry at home and she poops on the toilet probably 50% of the time and if she goes in her diaper, she asks to be changed immediately.  She also wants badly to take dance classes, but she has to be trained first.

  • We did it.  When DS was 14 months he was telling us when he had to poop and was very interested in the potty but since I was pregnant we held off and decided to do it when we were on maternity/paternity leave.  So DS was PT (day, naps and night) 3 months later.  It was very easy and I think having a newborn made it easier since all she did was sleep anyways at that time.  We just put him in underwear and set the timer for every 30 minutes and danced/raced, etc. to the potty.  The second day we did every 45 minutes and the third we did 1 hour (unless he told us then we restarted the timer for when he last went).  After 3 days he was telling us and we ditched the timer.  It was very easy and pain free.  Best of luck!
  • I have no advice, but will be in the same position -- they're having "potty week" at DS' daycare next week, so suddenly we're going to start potty training while we have 3-week-old twins! If it doesn't work, at least we have a number of months before the preschool deadline for having him fully out of diapers.

  • Ok- So I am potty training now at 7 month pregnant w/my toddler who will be 3 in April and I also have a daughter who is 1 or who will turn 1.5 in April.  They are 18 months apart.

I made all the excuses in the world als- but due to our situation, I knew that my DS was  not ready and the changes we had earlier in my prengnacy (travel, moving, etc) would not be the best idea.  My son does not do well with changes, so I knew that there was probably too many things going on for him to concentrate on PT.  Now......it's very challenging, but I am doing it- I have no idea how, but I am doing the best I can.  I feel like a bad mom because my almost 1.5 year old is being left out.

    Motherhood- I tell ya......
