Any tips to get a BF LO to take a bottle

We've been trying since he was 4 weeks old to get him to take a bottle.  He took one a few times while I was out but now he screams bloody murder.  We've tried the Medela, Dr. Browns, and the Breastflow bottles and I really don't want to buy more bottles at this point.  He's breastfed so we just need him to take one when I need/want to be away from him for any length of time.

FWIW - we have also tried getting him to take a pacifier since he was born with no luck either.

  • Have you been the one to try to give it? Maybe let your H try when you're not in the room. Another tip I read was to try before he gets really hungry so then he won't be as pissed off and open to trying something new.

  • Are you there? My LO will hit the bottle out of the way and scream if I try to give it to him or if he can see/hear me. If I'm in the bath though, or not in the house, H or my MIL can give him a bottle no problem. He took one from me when he was smaller, not anymore though.

  • Agree about having your H give the bottle while you are somewhere else. Other than that, just keep trying different things, and I'd say offer a bottle once a day until he starts taking it. Sorry, I know it's frustrating...

  • Also, as far as the bottle type is concerned, I read somewhere to try 20 times before trying a new one. Something about giving him a chance to get used to it before trying something else. A did horrible with Medela at first (when she was about a week old) and does way better with them now. Maybe try some of the ones you have again before buying more.

We've tried when I'm not there and when he's on the first floor and I'm on the third and it's still the same result.  My husband freaks out (panics and feels like a sh!tty dad) when A starts crying as he tries to give him the bottle.

FM - I didn't know about the 20 times thing...I'll stop switching, oops.

  • I don;t have any tips other than not being there and having dh hold LO the same way you nurse?

If that doesn't work you could try a cup?

  • The first few times I gave DD a bottle she didnt want it either.  I put her on the boppy, on the floor, so no one was holding her and squeezed the nipple a few times.  She eventually started sucking.  Even now though she will not take a bottle if she is already crying, you have to calm her down first.

Good luck!  Its the worst if you can never leave the house without LO!

  • The only way DS will take a bottle is if it's super warm - like my body temp warm
