Has anyone ever donated to a milk bank before?

I miscounted my frozen milk, I actually have 248oz. Indifferent I got in touch with the milk bank recently and haven't heard back from them. Should I call them again? The nearest one to me is in San Jose, so not willing to drive up there... but I've heard I can ship it and they'll reimburse me for the price to overnight it and put it on ice, I just need them to contact me about being a good candidate and get an address. Since I've never had any major or recent illnesses, and have a very strict diet, I'd think they would be jumping at the chance to get their hands on 200oz of milk! New milk, with colostrum in it! Should I give them a few more days before calling? I don't want to bug them but my freezer is filling up and I'd like to donate it to make room for food/more milk.

I'm fine with donating that much because on the whole, my DD gets boob juice and if I happen to not have EBM on me at the time she needs to eat or I'm not there, I'm fine with her having formula. Those NICU babies need that milk far more than my LO does.

  • call them back for sure! I donated 300 oz with my first DD because she wouldn't take a bottle. They will most likely have you go get blood drawn for testing before they will accept your milk. But I would definitely call back to get the ball rolling. They could do the interview over the phone. You are awesome to do this, babies in the nicu will greatly benefit from it! I plan to do it again too!

  • I wonder if there's a nearby hospital I can get my bloodwork done at. I really cannot drive up that far with 3 children. There really needs to be a place here for donating milk.

  • Send it here.. I'll PM you my address! Haha, kidding. But I am jealous of your ability to make so much milk.. I barely made enough for LO alone when I was BFing- forget having enough left over to donate! Good for you, though :) Those NICU babies do need it! I hope you find a way to get it there without having to drive all the way to San Jose!

  • I donated over 100 oz in Aidan's name last year. I found out about donation from the lc at my hospital so I would call them to find out if maybe they can also try to contact the bank. I had to get blood work drawn but they took my milk before they got the results back. I plan on donating again. This time since Lucas was full-term, my milk will go to other full term babies

  • I had thougth about this, but MH caved and said I could get a chest freezer for the basement to store my milk. I plan to BF/pump until DD is 4mos old then I will start to use the freezer stash since I will most likely have enough to last until she is a year old and a chest freezer will keep the milk for 6mos. after its been pumped.

Def call again or contact your local hospital.
